Position Description
Join us in shaping Seattle's streets and public spaces!

At the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), we don't just move people, we connect communities, build safer streets, and create a more sustainable city.

With a bold vision for the future, we're tackling big challenges: making travel safer, cutting carbon emissions, creating welcoming public spaces and ensuring reliable, affordable transportation for everyone, no matter who they are or where they live.

Seattle is growing fast, and we're growing with it. Thanks to a historic voter-approved $1.55 billion investment in transportation in 2024, we're building sidewalks, bike lanes, plazas, fixing bridges, and improving transit connections to keep our city moving safely.

We're a team of problem solvers, planners, engineers, communicators, and field crews-bringing purpose-driven work to life. Now, we need passionate, innovative talent like you. Let's build a Seattle that works for everyone, together!

SDOT's Policy & Planning Division is thrilled to announce two exciting opportunities for Senior Urban Designers, under the city's classification title of (Senior Transportation Planner), to join its Urban Design Section. These newly created positions will play a pivotal role in advancing two transformative, levy-funded initiatives: the Low-Pollution Neighborhoods Program and the People, Streets and Public Spaces (PSPS) Capital Program.

As project managers for either the Low-Pollution Neighborhoods Program or the PSPS Capital Program, these roles offer the chance to shape Seattle's urban landscape and deliver impactful, community-focused projects. The Senior Urban Designers will lead a variety of design, coordination, data analysis, and community engagement activities to support SDOT's mission and goals. The selected candidates will dedicate 40% of their time to developing transportation and urban design plans and projects, another 40% of their time to project review and coordination, and the remaining 20% of their time will be committed to community engagement activities.

The Low-Pollution Neighborhoods Program, a mayoral priority, requires a thoughtful approach to navigating complex and sensitive issues. Representative projects include neighborhood assessments, public realm design, and program coordination across SDOT and the City. The People, Streets and Public Spaces Program, defined in the Seattle Transportation Plan, focuses on creating vibrant, accessible public spaces that enhance the city's livability. Representative projects include public realm design, street design concept development and guidance, and project development in partnership with community groups and organizations.

Ideal candidates will bring a wealth of experience in urban design and transportation planning, along with a commitment to embedding Seattle's Race and Social Justice priorities into every aspect of their work. They will also be well-versed in the design and delivery of people-oriented streets and public spaces through both tactical urbanism and long-term improvement projects. These positions are opportunities to make a lasting difference in the lives of Seattle's residents.
