The Opportunity

Reporting to the Vice President, Property, and working closely with business leaders and your peers, we are looking for a Commercial Property Underwriting Specialist/Director to join our team. What You Will Do

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Underwrite property and equipment breakdown exposures in the commercial property and construction market, mainly for the Eastern Canada region, with a specific focus on target segments, including but not limited to, manufacturing, forestry, contractors, project specific construction, warehousing and wholesale, realty and retail.
  • Review submissions, identify hazards and exposures, evaluate risks, determine terms, establish capacity, set price, discuss with facultative reinsurers, and negotiate with brokers for new business, renewals, or project extensions. Terms provided will be based on TMC's underwriting guidelines.
  • Support the cross selling of multiple lines of business and coordinate quotations for multi-line customers with our Casualty and Automobile departments and seek out solutions for TMC to provide holistic s solutions to our brokers and customers situated in Eastern Canada.
  • Work collaboratively alongside representatives from internal or external risk control and internal or external claims staff with a focus on delivering exceptional service to TMC brokers, MGA's and customers.
  • Drive the profitable growth of the portfolio by maintaining a strong market presence and prioritizing visibility with focus on our brokers and customers;
  • Attend and participate in insurance industry, reinsurance, or broker events as required.
  • You will operate within your underwriting authority to ensure TMC's guidelines have been adhered to. Develop and adhere to appropriate underwriting standards and maintain underwriting discipline in line with the established underwriting framework.
  • Work alongside your colleagues and the VP Property to ensure TMC's governance and control ambitions are addressed through peer audits or file reviews within the established timelines outlined.
  • Work with the VP Property to meet established thresholds and targets relating to gross premium, net premium, new business, renewal retention, inflation uplift, rate uplift and profitability for the various property and equipment breakdown portfolios.
  • Understand and enhance underwriting strategies, develop new business propositions, document renewal strategies and plans, enhance value propositions, and work with others to build marketing messages and materials.
  • Conduct analysis of lead carrier or broker manuscript policy wordings as required.
  • Provide technical training, mentoring and other learning and development opportunities to Underwriters, Underwriting Assistants and other applicable individuals.

Who You Are

You are experienced underwriter with broad property underwriting experience across various sectors of the market. You are team player with a positive attitude who thrives in a consensus culture with an emphasis on collaboration. You are a self-starter who is excited by the opportunity to jump right in and can come up to speed quickly. You are comfortable working on a lean team and are not afraid to roll up your sleeves and do the work that needs to be done.

The ideal candidate will have a unique combination of education and experience including:
    • 8+ years of commercial underwriting experience
    • Established expertise in commercial property underwriting in upper mid-market, risk managed or specialty space
    • Understanding of Equipment Breakdown Insurance coverages and service requirements for exposures within the commercial property space.
    • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the Canadian commercial property and overall Property & Casualty insurance market
    • A positive mindset, service-oriented point of view with a passion for negotiation and influence
    • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills, both inside and outside an organization
    • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and strong presentation skills
    • Creative and solution-oriented
    • Comfort with insurance applications and technology including Excel, Power Point and corporate Policy Administration System
    • Willingness to travel as required
    • Fluency in both French and English required as the role will be operating not only in Quebec, but also in the Atlantic provinces.

We work in a hybrid model and you should expect to split your time between working in the office and working remotely, with flexibility based on the role and the business needs. We currently have an office in downtown Toronto and will eventually be establishing offices in other provinces.
