Position Summary

The Program Director of the Cardiology Fellowship Program is responsible for the leadership, organization, operation, and general administration of the Cardiology Fellowship Program sponsored by Lakeland Regional Health (LRH). The Program Director establishes the strategic direction of the program and is responsible for the standards, quality and reputation of the program. The Program Director is expected to integrate the Cardiology Fellowship Program with physician practices and hospital clinical services in a manner that enhances value and quality and promotes an optimal environment for professional practice and medical education.     • Standard Work: Director - Cardiology fellowship Program
    • Organize and direct the Cardiology Fellowship Program at LRH, including the organization of rotations and other educational activities at all clinical sites that participate in the program. This includes ensuring the quality of didactic and clinical education in all sites that participate in the program.
    • Dedicate no less than 30% (at least 12 hours per week) of total professional effort to the administrative and educational activities of the Cardiology educational program. Be available and accessible to residents at the primary teaching site(s). Oversee development of an effective resident advising program. Supervise any Cardiology subspecialty training programs sponsored by the institution and linked to the core program to ensure compliance with the ACGME accreditation standards. Hold supervisory authority over all educational tracks in the Cardiology Fellowship Program. Ensure that the program does not place excessive reliance on residents for service as opposed to education. Maintain active clinical practice in Cardiology. Recruit and select candidates for the residency program through the National Residency Matching Program
    • Provide accurate statistical and narrative information in accordance with the requirements of the ACGME and the ACGME's Review Committee for Cardiology. This includes but is not limited to the program application forms and annual program resident updates to the ADS, and ensuring that the information submitted is accurate and complete. Submit reports on program, faculty, and fellow performance to the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) as requested by the Chair of the GMEC.
    • Ensure the implementation of policies and procedures consistent with the institutional and program requirements, including but not limited to policies for resident duty hours and the working environment, moonlighting, grievance procedures, and due process, as established by the GMEC, and in compliance with the ACGME Institutional Requirements. Maintain current knowledge of the accreditation and operational requirements of the residency program, including monitoring current trends and anticipating changes. Maintain working knowledge of GME finance and reimbursement as it pertains to the Cardiology Fellowship program and associated fellowship programs. Attend educational programs sponsored by faculty members in Cardiology and other educational activities intended to maintain and improve the quality of the program. Obtain approval and written signature of the DIO for: a. All applications for ACGME accreditation of new programs b. The addition or deletion of a participating institution c. A change in the structure, length, or format of the educational program d. A change in the approved resident complement e. Progress reports requested by the Review Committee f. Responses to all proposed adverse actions g. Requests for increase or any change to resident duty hours h. Voluntary withdrawals of ACGME accredited programs i. Requests for appeal of an adverse action j. Appeal presentations to a Board of Appeal or the ACGME k. Proposals to ACGME for approval of innovative educational approaches.
    • Prepare and send proposals to ACGME for approval of innovative educational approaches. Select qualified Cardiology physicians and other specialists to serve on the program faculty. Approve a local director at each participating site to be accountable for resident education. Organize the faculty to deliver a consistently high-quality education program. Evaluate the performance of faculty in meeting program objectives, including resident satisfaction with the program.
    • Develop and implement programs to enhance the knowledge, clinical expertise, and teaching skills of the faculty. Assure that faculty meet research and scholarly activity requirements of the program, including active participation in the clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and research conferences in a manner that promotes a spirit of inquiry and scholarship.
    • Prepare and implement the Cardiology Fellowship curriculum to provide a high-quality educational program and meet the requirements of the ACGME. Establish the clinical assignments and schedules of the residents to achieve the educational objectives of the program. Resident schedules and assignments for each resident in the program are expected to be established no later than June 1 for the upcoming academic year beginning July 1
    • Collaborate with the faculty to evaluate resident performance in relation to the educational objectives of the program and the ACGME's milestones for Cardiology. The Program Director shall establish and maintain a Clinical Competency Committee in accordance with ACGME requirements and shall maintain appropriate documentation of the evaluation process in accordance with ACGME requirements. Make decisions, with faculty input, to promote residents to the next level of training in the program and decisions to graduate residents upon completion of the program. The Program Director is responsible for documenting completion of training and qualifications for each resident, as required by the American Board of Cardiology. Additionally, the Program Director is responsible for providing verification of residency education for all residents, including those who leave the program prior to completion
    • Ensure that residents are assigned clinical responsibilities appropriate for their level of training and level of knowledge and skill, are properly supervised in clinical assignments, and provide safe and effective patient care. The Program Director shall develop and maintain written supervision standards, requirements, and procedures in accordance with current ACGME requirements. Participate in the Graduate Medical Education Committee, and other hospital committees as requested by the DIO and the Department Chair of the Department of Cardiology. The Program Director shall serve as the Chair of the Cardiology Education Committee.
    • Personally demonstrate scholarly activity as evidenced by activities such as peer-reviewed funding, publication of original research in a peer-reviewed journal, publication of review articles of chapters in textbooks, publication or presentation of case reports or clinical series at local, regional, or national professional and scientific society meetings. The Program Director is expected to participate regularly in clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs, and research conferences in a manner that promotes a spirit of inquiry and scholarship. The Program Director will demonstrate support for resident participation, as appropriate, in research and scholarly activities

Other information:

Experience Essential:

- Board Certified or Board Eligible with completion of certification as delineated within Lakeland Regional Health Medical Staff Office Bylaws.

- Have at least 3 years' experience as a core faculty member in an ACGME-accredited Cardiology Fellowship program.

- Have unrestricted credentials within the Department of Cardiology of Lakeland Regional Medical Center and be licensed to practice medicine by the State of Florida.

- Possess the required specialty expertise, as well as documented educational and administrative abilities, to carry out the responsibilities of the role and to achieve the goals and objectives of the program.

- Appointed and in good standing to the LRH medical staff. Be appointed in good standing to Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

- Be clinically active in Cardiology.

Certification Essential:

Be certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiology or hold credentials deemed equivalent to Certification by the ACGME's Cardiology Fellowship Review Committee.

License Essential:

Current Florida License to practice Medicine in the State of Florida.
