SDOT has an exciting opportunity for two collaborative and innovative Associate Structural Engineers (Associate Civil Engineers) on our Structural Engineering Services (SES) team within the Capital Projects Division. These key team members will support structural analysis and design work on vital infrastructure projects by preparing calculations and performing computer model analysis to ensure safety and constructability. Above all, these engineers will enhance the team's capacity to deliver on our commitment to the 2024 Transportation Levy for high-quality, safe and timely project delivery!

Job Responsibilities

  • Supports the delivery of SDOT capital projects in review or design capacity.
  • Serves as a Structural Lead and may serve as a Project Engineer on Capital Projects.
  • Employs working knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of structural engineering and construction specifications for public works.
  • Performs preliminary design, engineering analysis and design, cost estimating, read and interpret plans, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Coordinates the technical design efforts of a multi-discipline internal design teams to complete construction documents for bid.
  • Provides design support during construction, including review and respond to construction RFIs, submittals, and assuring quality delivery of the construction products.
  • Provides support to supervisors and project managers for the preparation of construction permit applications.
  • Researches existing conditions, as-built plans, and performs technical field investigations.
  • Maintains high standard of quality assurance and quality control for SDOT deliverables, including documentation for record keeping.
  • Supports department goals in promoting diversity, social justice, and transportation equity.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree inCivil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology, or related field.

Experience:
  • Three (3) years of full-time professional civil engineering experience.

OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.

Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or are able to describe comparable experience:
  • Certified Engineer-In-Training (EIT) in State of Washington.
  • Professional Engineer license in state of Washington.
  • Extensive bridge modeling, analysis, and design experience.
  • Professional experience to performing multi-discipline coordination, multi-tasking, preparing engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimating.
  • Ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace in a diverse environment.
  • Able to manage and balancing multiple demand and variety of workload.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skill.
  • Strong organization, time management, and customer service skills.

Other Requirements:
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
  • Work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 3 days of the work is completed in a City office, and 2 days of the work is completed remotely in a regular 40-hour work week.
  • Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites.
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.

License:
  • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility
