Job Description
This position will perform certain magistrate duties pursuant to AS 22.15, including jury trials, complex small claims trials and applications for search warrants and electronic monitoring. Preside over all phases of minor offense proceedings, district court criminal proceedings and felony proceedings when still in district court stage. Preside over protective order proceedings, small claims and formal district court civil proceedings at all stages including evictions, discovery, motions, trials and execution on judgement. Preside over presumptive death proceedings.
As a standing master, this position will preside over dissolution, divorce, custody, and domestic relations modification and enforcement actions, preside over Probate, Child in Need of Aid, and juvenile delinquency matters. They will conduct hearings in uncontested and contested proceedings and prepare recommendations to superior court judges who review the record before promulgating the final decision.

Additional duties may include serving as a training judge for other magistrates and deputy magistrates, serving on special committee assignments, and performing limited clerical functions.
This position will occasionally be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. The incumbent may serve "on call" outside of regular office hours.

A Magistrate Judge 4 requires substantial knowledge of:
  • Alaska Statutes and Alaska Rules of Court.
  • Local ordinances and bail schedules.
  • Formal courtroom proceedings.
  • Advanced legal research techniques.
  • Principles of law and complex office and policy management.


Magistrate Judges are appointed to a four-year term and serve a one-year probationary period. The probationary period may be extended. Following successful completion of the probationary period, an incumbent may only be removed from office for cause during their term. A Magistrate Judge may be reappointed to additional four-year terms.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Graduation from an accredited law school with a JD degree AND active membership in the Alaska Bar Association (ABA).

Minimum Qualifications
1. Must be a citizen of the United States of America and of the State of Alaska.
2. Must be at least 21 years of age.
3. Must be a resident of Alaska for at least six months immediately preceding appointment as magistrate.

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited law school with an LLB or JD degree.
AND
Active membership in the Alaska Bar Association.
