Position Summary

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Resource Nurse is a leadership role responsible for the day to day coordination of patient care and related activities for the unit(s) / patient care area(s) ensuring the best quality of care for the patients. This individual acts as a resource and role model for all clinical staff and works collaboratively with the Program Manager of the Regional Birthing Program to provide leadership congruent with the vision, mission, values and strategic objectives of the Hospital. The Resource Nurse fosters partnerships between patients, families, team members, and external stakeholders to promote safe, effective, evidence-based, and high-quality outcomes.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinating patient/staff assignment
Assessing patient assignments and staffing needs for the nursing teams in the Postpartum unit, Birthing Assessment and Triage Unit as well as the Labour and Delivery Unit and Newborn Care Clinic
Works collaboratively with the Children's Services Resource Nurse to ensure adequate coverage for the program.
Adjusting and adapting clinical assignments, resources, and team members to ensure the delivery of emergency and acute services while minimizing the use of overtime.
Ensures admissions, discharges and patient flow processes are optimized by aligning staffing needs and resources to support optimal care delivery models in all areas of accountability. Leading discussions with OMSH partners for optimal patient off-service needs as required.
Ensuring team members' breaks are planned based on actual or anticipated patient activity, while maintaining a safe working environment in accordance with local and collective standards.
Assigns patient workloads based on staff ability, availability, learning needs, and patient acuity, ensuring the CNO Scope of Practice Standard is applied in decision-making. Adjusts patient assignments as needed to accommodate changes in patient status.
Provides a detailed report of patient activity for the night shift charge nurse.
Participates and leads the weekly forecasting of patient care planning to optimize excellence in care delivery.
Participates in the hospital bed meetings to ensure continued partnership with bed flow and patient transfers. If unable to attend, assigns a delegate.
Partners with Biomedical and Materials Management to ensure equipment within the department is maintained in good working order and identifying needed supplies and equipment and equipment repairs.
Oversight and facilitation of staff scheduling in collaboration with the Regional Birthing Program Manager.
When necessary, has the ability to assume patient care assignments in Labour and Delivery, Postpartum and Birthing Assessment and Triage Unit, Newborn Care Clinic, attend C-sections in the scrub and circulating roles, and take a leadership role in code situations.
Monitor daily elective and outpatient activity
Assist with the flow of obstetrical outpatient program visits and provide clinical care for urgent needs when floor staffing is adequately covered.

Patient and staff safety
Oversee infant abduction system staff access, and ensure utilization on all babies on the units.
Co-lead unit huddles with manager and ensure huddle board is up to date.
Assist with the oversight of Code OB, Code Pink, and Code Amber, and lead or review debriefs following actual and mock codes.
Complete an RL6 to document the code events and debrief. Works with Program Manager to ensure debrief recommendations are carried out.
Conducts monthly quality audits e.g. hand hygiene audits for the Program Manager as required.
Conducts chart audits and 2x2 audits as required.
Support learning of Cerner and any new electronic documentation as applicable.
Participates in accreditation standards implementation.
Participants in policy and procedure development.
Implement closure process if unavoidable. Works with Managers, After Hours Administrators, staff and physicians to identify alternatives to closure.
Ensure staff routinely check all patient care areas to confirm that equipment is present, fully operational, and ready for patient care.
Models expertise in all emergency code situations and supports staff through such events.
Models Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) practices for employees and hospital standards to ensure a safe work environment.

Promoting teambuilding and teamwork
Models the hospital values and is a resource for all clinical staff.
Coaching and mentoring staff in partnership with Program Managers and Quality Experience Leader to ensure clinical competency is achieved.
Facilitating education and training opportunities in collaboration with Program Manager and Quality Experience Leader. Facilitating unit specific orientation and support integration of new staff members and students onto the units.
Models excellence in establishes partnerships with all stakeholders utilizing enhanced communication skills, collaboration and expertise to ensure optimal care needs are met for all patients.
Ensures timely communication and coordination between NICU/Paeds, Newborn Care Clinic, Birthing Program Services. Emergency Services and the Operating Room regarding activity, staffing, and patient flow.
Provides clinical assistance to all areas as required and able to sustain and model excellence in clinical knowledge and competency skills of leadership.
Able to identify the learning needs of staff members. Facilitates and supports the provision of clinical experience oppourtunities for staff.

Communicating and collaborating with Program Manager on:
Leads daily clinical rounds with interprofessional team.
Patient and Family Care needs.
Interprofessional team leadership for excellence in clinical care delivery.
Models effective communication to mitigate potential complaints.
Demonstrates excellence staff support and safety and able to make difficult decisions to meet best practice standards.
Supply and equipment issues.
Collaborates with Program Manager in the process of hiring staff as well as providing performance feedback to staff.
Trends affecting patient flow and clinical care.
Initial investigation of risk issues, documentation and follow up.
Shared Governance participation.
Collect monthly stats as identified by the manager (incl. BORN stat accuracy).
Performs other duties/meetings as assigned by the Program Manager.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Current College of Nurses of Ontario registration as Registered Nurse.
Master's in Nursing or other Health related field is preferred.
Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required.
Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required.
Current Fetal Health Surveillance (FHS) required.
Perioperative scrub and circulating experience required
Perioperative certificate or equivalent preferred
S.T.A.B.L.E. or A.C.O.R.N. program certification preferred.
Breastfeeding certificate preferred
International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) an asset
Evidence of completion of continuing education within the past 2 years.

Experience:
Current experience in Labour and Delivery, Postpartum and Birthing Assessment and Triage
Five (5) years recent clinical experience required in Labour and Delivery, Postpartum and Birthing Assessment and Triage experience is essential.
Team Leader/Resource Nurse/ Charge Nurse experience essential
Adult teaching experience essential.
Experience in interdisciplinary team leadership and with the principles of patient-focused model of care preferred.
Active participation in care team, unit council, and various Leadership meetings preferred.
