Purpose:
Work as a vital member of various project teams that address strategy and program development issues across all of UPMC's Health Plan. This position provides: (1) research (e.g., identify key dynamics within a market), (2) development (e.g., create business model to manage risk; create operating model to optimize outcomes), and (3) coordination (e.g., synthesize the varied perspectives/requirements from diverse client-members, external vendors, regulatory, finance, product design, etc.- into cohesive operating models) to support a portfolio of projects. This position requires extensive client and external constituent interactions, as well as business plan and presentation writing.

This is a hybrid position that requires in-person meetings and 2-3 days in the office per week.

Responsibilities:
  • Work with operating unit executives (e.g., COO Medicare Products, President Medicare Products) to develop and start new initiatives, as well as critically evaluate and refine existing programs. Ensure client needs are met. Identify and document new industry and market trends; understand and explain implications for UPMC. Develop new and better ways to convey market and external dynamics to diverse audiences. Continuously track and assess changes in UPMC's benefits. Negotiate arrangements with partners and vendors. Facilitate affiliation partner working groups to develop new programs.
  • Manage a portfolio of multiple projects and clients. Proactively identify and appropriately frame projects in response to market/industry dynamics, business unit priorities, and system-wide priorities. Frame and integrate these projects with business unit activities. Manage projects from inception (business planning) through implementation (start-up operations). Complete projects in a timely manner.
  • Develop and mentor staff. Mentor and develop the Department's analysts and consultants; develop skills and refine management acumen.
  • Produce project teams' deliverables, maps/strategy presentations, business plans, market profiles/assessments, presentations, etc. Translate teams' discussions and decisions into effective programs. Synthesize data into actionable information for diverse audiences. Coordinate team members' activities to ensure timely completion of deliverables. Coordinate with other Departments (e.g., Product and Finance) and operating units to ensure strategies address the full continuum of issues. Communicate and collaborate with internal and external constituents to ensure coordinated and effective strategies are pursued while work is streamlined. Maintain rigorous analytical and data synthesis skills; in particular, develop benefit analysis and other decision support models to guide strategy and key operational decisions.
  • Support senior executives (Director of Program Management, COO Medicare Products, President Medicare Products, and Product Design Leaders). Understand current organizational priorities and objectives. Complete special projects as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Master's level degree in Business Administration, Health Administration or a quantitative field of study (e.g., mathematics, economics, sciences, finance, etc.) with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience (e.g., strategy, planning, business development, quantitative decision support, finance) required; or a Bachelor degree with 7 years of experience.
  • Prior experience should include project management (developing work plans, tracking progress, coordinating teams composed of individuals from multiple departments, completing deliverables, etc.); advanced analytics (manipulating complex datasets, interpreting data, communicating complex analytical concepts in easy to understand ways, etc.); business development (e.g., writing/authoring business plans for new operations); and negotiations with external audiences (e.g., secure affiliation agreements).
  • Experience in a consulting, investment banking, corporate or competitive strategy, or service line management environment is preferred; some operational experience is preferred.
  • Given the breadth of projects spanning all UPMC divisions, the candidate must exhibit knowledge and understanding across the full continuum of services and markets.
  • Exceptional Excel and PowerPoint skills are required.
  • Due to the fluid nature and visibility of the department's work, flexible work hours are required and often exceed 50 hours per week.
