Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services - food, clothing and housing, and support services - education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

This role is also to lead from a position of coaching, supporting, and developing the leadership and spiritual competencies for the shelter managers.

NOTE

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide strong leadership and support to Shelter Managers in their given geographic area, fostering their professional growth and promoting a collaborative team environment.
- Exemplify the employment values of The Mustard Seed in all actions and interactions, becoming a role model for the team and reinforcing the organization's culture.
- Collaborate with the other Director of Shelters (South), Sr. Director Shelter Operations and other departmental leadership (food/facilities, etc.) to coordinate and facilitate Shelter programming that aligns with The Mustard Seed's mission and strategic objectives.
- Create and ensure standards laid out by the Executive, Sr. Director, and Shelter Leadership team are being met (ex/ loss of service, expectations of dry shelter or behaviour-based, etc.) and regularly review these standards to ensure relevance and effectiveness
- Ensure standards delineated by provincial funding bodies are being met (ex/ perform assessment of SCSS audit submission, etc.)
- Ensure timely and effective responses to Incident Reports (IR's) and create an iterative learning strategy to increase program effectiveness.
- Provide ongoing support for each Manager, including:
- Issues with adhering to shelter standards and rules
- HR issues with staff, including support for PIPs and coaching
- Examining scheduling and ensuring appropriate staffing for each shelter
- Supporting with correspondence with governmental funding bodies (such as the Shelter Stats reporting) and queries from oversight bodies that arise (ex/ from SCSS or BC Housing)
- Support shelter managers on executing housing focused shelter programming
- Collaborate with Sr. Director Shelter Operations on budgets and other higher-level initiatives that have operational impact.
- Provide leadership for new shelter start-ups.
SKILLS REQUIRED
- Strong business acumen including strong administrative skills
- Knowledge of the shelter operations/environment
- Systems thinking with informed decision-making skills
- E.g., knowledge of occupancy levels, transition strategies, stewardship of government funds, legalities of running a shelter
- Hands-on responsibility for overseeing their portfolio while working collaboratively with other TMS leaders; results driven and committed to the collection and dissemination of metrics/statistics
- Recognized for strong people leadership; training, developing and empowering of staff
- Develop partnerships with external organizations as a face and name of TMS for this portfolio.
- Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of operational business plans and budgeting requirements. Responsible for financial and budget oversight and accountability
- Strong championing and communication of organizational values and standards
- Strategic thinker and an effective decision maker
- Manages ambiguity well and possess strong problem-solving skills

- Hands-on leader and strong collaborator both internally and within sector
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- 5 years of experience working in the human services field, preferably with homeless serving and/or poverty reduction/relief focused organizations;
- Related Bachelor's Degree or equivalent;
- 3-5 years experience managing and leading staff;
- Outstanding conflict resolution skills;
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, diverse environment;
- Ability to work under pressure and manage crises;
- Proven ability to network and build strategic partnerships;
- Affirm and agree with The Mustard Seed Statement of Faith and demonstrate a commitment to lead in a Christian faith based organization;
- Vulnerable Sector Check and Employment Security Check are required;
- A Valid Class 5 Drivers License and personal vehicle are required;
WORKING CONDITIONS
- The Mustard Seed is a 24/7 operation which may require communication with staff outside of regular working hours;
- Traveling is required as part of this role;
- Very fast paced and demanding work environment;
- Moderate physical effort is required to successfully accomplish the essential job functions, such as keyboarding, writing and verbal communication;
- Moderate to high mental effort is required to respond to highly intense situations, including traumatic events.
