Position Summary

The Registered Nurse in the Emergency department is responsible for providing direct patient care in accordance with the mission, vision, goals, objectives and policies of the hospital and the Clinical Services Department.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Meeting the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Nursing Practice for Registered Nurses and functions within the policies and procedures of the Patient Care Services.
Organizing and implementing a plan of nursing care to meet the needs of each assigned patient.
Uses evidence-based practice in decision making to coordinate patient care activities and provides effective resources and support as appropriate.
Utilizes critical thinking skills to assess changes in patient status (complexity, stability) that may require consultation or transfer of care
Monitoring performance data with respect to patient care and workflow processes and outcomes and optimizing outcomes by participating as required in improvement activities
Effectively utilizing human and material resources.
Participating in the orientation of new staff members to the nursing unit.
Attending educational programs and in-services to enhance his/her knowledge, and participating in the planning and implementing of same.
Maintaining professional competence by assessing his/her own professional development needs, and establishing goals and actions to meet same.
Assisting in maintaining the established standards of care through individual performance, participation in hospital committees, and assisting with performance improvement, work and patient flow activities
Working collaboratively with external education facility personnel to facilitate and support student learning.
Maintaining an awareness of current developments in nursing practice.
Performing Charge Nurse role when assigned.
Responsible to contribute to ongoing Patient safety
Functioning in accordance with established hospital emergency procedures.
Promoting collaboration by effective communication.
Participating as a member of the interprofessional team and promoting effective liaisons between patient, family and physician, and other health team members and community agencies. Encouraging referrals to appropriate community resources.
Demonstrating knowledge of and maintaining competence in accordance with RHPA and other relevant legislation and standards.
Participating in assessing health needs and promoting health education and maintenance through patient and family teaching programs.
Performs other duties as may be assigned by direct manager.

Qualifications

Education:
Registered Nurse with Current General Class Registration required.
Certified in BCLS and recertify annually required.
Certified in ACLS required
Completion of Coronary Care One Certificate within previous two years or current usage of arrhythmia analysis within previous two years, to ACLS standards required. Must be able to demonstrate arrhythmia interpretation during orientation period.
Current Patient Assessment Course within 3 years required (exempt if newly graduated within the past 3 years). OR currently working in acute care using assessment skills
Defibrillation and External pacemaker to ER department standards required.
Successful completion of exam to administer lifesaving medication required within orientation period.
IV Therapy and IV Med administration course required or demonstrated recent experience in an acute care Emergency Room setting
BSCN considered an asset.
Preference given to nurses with PALS, CTAS, TNCC, Certified Emergency Care Course, Certified Canadian Emergency Nursing Certificate.

Experience:
Experience working in an Emergency Department is required.
2 years acute medical/surgical experience required if no Emergency experience.
Participation in RNAO/ ENAO/ ENA an asset.
Satisfactory work performance and attendance record required.

Demonstrates proficiency in written and verbal communications skills in relation to working with patients across the care continuum.
Demonstrates a commitment to develop knowledge, skill and ability to care for patients with Ventilators, Bipap, Special line care, peritoneal dialysis & CVP required.
Demonstrated ability to work with flexibility under ever changing environment.
Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize and multi task efficiently.
Demonstrated ability to care for complex patients within an interprofessional team.
Demonstrated strong interpersonal communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
Demonstrated ability in conflict management.
Demonstrated problem solving skills and decision-making skills with the ability to appropriately delegate tasks.
Demonstrated skill in patient education and promotion of patient independence using principles of adult learning.
Demonstrated proven ability to be accountable and to foster accountability in others.
Demonstrated knowledge of legislative requirements, medical/legal issues, and commitment to remaining abreast of changes.
Demonstrated appreciation and respect for protocol, professionalism and confidentiality.
Demonstrated accountability for decision-making
