Description:
Under the general direction of the Assistant Chief Nursing Officer,
the OB Nursing Unit Director is responsible for developing and implementing strategies for the clinical care of a defined group of patient care areas.
This role fosters best practices for patient care and operational efficiency.
The Director also handles non-clinical functions related to their clinical area.
As a leader, this position shapes and interprets the standards required to ensure quality outcomes,
as well as a high degree of patient, physician, and employee satisfaction.
Responsibilities include assessing and managing overall staffing effectiveness,
ensuring the appropriate number, competency, and skill mix of staff are involved in the provision of health care services.
The Director manages unit personnel, including selection, promotion, evaluation, counseling, training, development, and termination.
This role provides leadership that promotes collegiality among staff, physicians, and the leadership team.
Quality and safety in patient care practices must be assured by creating an environment that encourages reporting of patient occurrences
and staff involvement in process improvement.
Financial and human resources must be allocated for improvement activities.
The Director manages financial and capital resources by monitoring operating revenue and expenses,
establishing cost control programs, and developing new or revised programs and services.
Leadership in professional nursing practice is essential, using established standards of care
and managing the care delivery system effectively.
The Director utilizes nursing expertise and managerial skills to foster service growth
and positively influence physician practice patterns.
Future equipment and technology needs are planned using research data.
This role involves investigating and obtaining resources for identified needs.
All functions are performed according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements.
Personnel management includes disseminating information, conducting evaluations, resolving conflicts,
addressing staff satisfaction issues, and documenting actions.
Coordination of patient care is overseen while ensuring appropriate staffing and unit scheduling.
Equipment and supply management are also part of the responsibilities.
Collaborating with other departments and maintaining positive physician relationships are vital.
Regulatory standards must be maintained, with post-survey follow-up as necessary.
The Director also manages the departmental budget and attends relevant meetings.
Continuous assessment of patient satisfaction sets high standards for staff and leadership to improve satisfaction scores.
