The County of San Diego is currently accepting job applications for Supervising Agricultural/Standards Inspector in Agriculture, Weights & Measures. Incumbents in this job class are responsible for supervising technical inspection and professional-related work in the enforcement of agricultural and/or weights and measures laws, regulations, and policies for consumer and agricultural industry protection. Also, incumbents in this class train, supervise, and evaluate staff and the work of various inspection, investigation, and enforcement projects and programs.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess knowledge and experience in agriculture, farming practices, insect pests and diseases, pesticide use, and weighing and measuring devices is desirable. The capability of using customer service skills to resolve customer questions or complaints is highly sought after. The ability to facilitate groups, to prepare and deliver professional presentations to community partners, to provide operational training, to organize and maintain training schedules, and to develop educational curriculum and training objectives are important in this position. The ideal candidate should have the ability to encourage team collaboration, positive communication and demonstrate good judgment. Effective communication will also be desirable characteristic with the candidate having strong writing skills and be able to articulate technical information in a concise, compelling, and easy to understand manner.

Hiring Timeline
  • Job Offer and Background Process begins after interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: The start date will be based upon the successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

Minimum Qualifications

1. One (1) year of experience as a Senior Agricultural/Standards Inspector with the County of San Diego; OR,
2. Three (3) years of experience as an Agricultural/Standards Inspector with the County of San Diego or equivalent experience in another California County, State or local agency.
AND
A. Possession of all five (5) of the following agricultural licenses from the State of California, Department of Food and Agriculture:
  • Pesticide Regulation
  • Investigation and Environmental Monitoring
  • Integrated Pest Management
  • Commodity Regulation
  • Pest Prevention and Plant Regulation
OR
B. Possession of all three (3) of the following weights and measures licenses from the State of California, Department of Food and Agriculture:
  • Weight Verification
  • Measurement Verification
  • Transaction and Product Verification

Condition of Employment
