Position Summary

The Special Education Services Assistant- General Education (Mathematics) will provide instruction at an appropriate level by demonstrating the ability to understand and follow the Alabama Course of Study for the content area. Listed below are the primary responsibilities for the position; however, other professional duties may be assigned by the Director of Special Education Services and/or Dean of Students to meet the needs of the College.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction and teach at an appropriate level.
  • Provide content development, teacher-focused content development, and student-focused content development.
  • Maintains the classroom to ensure the availability of a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Promotes good study habits and student independence to improve the quality of student outcomes.
  • Demonstrates computer literacy by utilizing current technology to communicate, collect, and analyze data.
  • Completes required documentation in an accurate and timely manner and maintains the confidentiality of special education records.
  • Demonstrates understanding of and follows the Alabama Course of Study for content areas.
  • Provide comprehensive instruction to students, including developing and implementing lesson plans, documenting student progress in subject matter, and using differentiated instruction based on individual student needs.
  • Develop and implement an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for each assigned student based on the school curriculum and state standards. Must be able to conduct IEP meetings with students.
  • Develop, submit, and implement course overviews, lesson plans, substitute teacher plans, etc.
  • Develop and maintain a classroom learning environment conducive to individual student achievement.
  • Collaborates with Special Education Assistants to provide Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).
  • Administers required evaluations and implements Individualized Education Program (IEP) to determine appropriate eligibility set by state and federal guidelines for special education.
  • Participates in in-service training and other continuing education activities to maintain high competence and skill in Special Education and Correctional Education.
  • Attends mandatory monthly staff meetings and any other meetings called by the Special Education Services Director and/or Coordinator.
  • Must be eligible to enter any/all Department of Corrections (DOC) facilities to perform the job duties and must maintain this status for continued employment.
  • Possesses an understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and mission of a community and technical college.
  • A sensitivity and commitment to cultural diversity.
  • Complies with any applicable guidelines, procedures, and policies set forth by the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) Board of Trustees, the Alabama Community College System, and J.F. Ingram State Technical College.
  • Organizes and completes special projects and performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Special Education Services Director and Coordinator.

Qualifications
REQUIRED:
    • Must be eligible to enter any/all Department of Corrections (DOC), and Pardons & Paroles Facilities to perform the job duties and maintain this status for continued employment.
    • Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution.
    • Alabama Teacher's Certificate with a 6-12 endorsement in Mathematics

PREFERRED:
    • Knowledgeable of guidelines, policies, and procedures of the S. Department of Education.
    • Knowledgeable of guidelines, policies, and procedures of the Alabama State Department of Education.
    • At least 5 years teaching general and/or correctional education experience.

Salary Range: Salary will be determined by placement on the appropriate Alabama Community College System-approved salary schedule. Local Salary Schedule Special Education Services ($60,636 - $110,140)

Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 2:30 pm with a 30-minute lunch.

Sick Leave
All regular full-time instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is equivalent to 7 hours per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. Tuition Assistance
This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.
