The Kelso School District serves the educational needs of nearly 5,000 students from preschool through high school. The school district has six elementary schools, two middle schools, one comprehensive high school, and four alternative high schools/programs. Voters in the Kelso community have a long history of supporting school levies and bonds.

Kelso is located along the I-5 corridor on Interstate 5, at the confluence of the Cowlitz, Coweeman and Columbia Rivers. Kelso is 48 miles north of Portland, Oregon and 125 miles south of Seattle. Kelso is located 80 miles east of the Pacific Ocean.

Desired Experience and Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Educational Administration
  • Promotes use of assessment data (e.g. monitors student progress, conducts and uses assessment data to guide instruction, uses academic support systems) for the purpose of increasing student achievement.
  • Teaching/counseling experience at the elementary level
  • Experience with student discipline, and facilitation of professional development
  • Experience with supervising and evaluating staff
  • Knowledgeable about all federal and state rules and regulations governing special education and Section 504
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. As key administrator of the building:
  • Instructional Leader for the site and District (e.g. responsible for student achievement, leads PLC process, focused conversations with teachers, daily classroom visits, shares and models effective teaching strategies, confronts classroom mediocrity, has high expectations, provides structure, strong disciplinarian, creates and maintains positive school climate (orderly), drive to move school forward, and includes all staff in the team effort in promoting student achievement) for the purpose of providing support to site staff in order to increase student achievement
  • Administer instructional programs, support and administrative services, and extra-curricular activities, including classroom teaching, office administration, special programs and services, maintenance, food service, volunteers and others.
  • Select, train, organize, motivate, monitor and evaluate staff.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of the PLC process (e.g. essential standards, common formative assessments, etc.)
  • Administer the individual school and the general welfare of all pupils, teachers, and other school personnel and maintain proper staff relations with school officials. Share in planning and in actively supporting all approved District-wide activities.
  • Direct, supervise and evaluate the instructional and guidance programs of the school or schools under his/her supervision.
  • Effectively communicate, maintain and apply current knowledge of all district services available and keep staff and parents apprised of same; support and utilize effectively such special programs, participate in evaluation of these services or programs, and recommend others as needed.
  • Work with teachers toward mutually understanding, developing and carrying out a sound educational program based upon and consistent with the educational goals, policies and regulations of the district.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to identifying achievement gaps and taking action by promote high levels of student learning through data-driven instruction, collaboration, equitable practices that support academic success for all students.
  • Set aside a regular time for teacher's meetings for discussion of methods of teaching, discipline and management, and for consideration of other plans for the improvement of the work of the school.
  • Maintain current and complete documentation, records in regards to students, staff and the facility.
As instructional leader of the building:
  • Supervise operation and care of buildings, grounds and other school property assigned to his/her care.
  • Administer within the school the approved regulations pertaining to business procedures, being accountable for all school materials and funds under the principal's control.
  • Direct and evaluate the work of all assigned personnel.
  • Participate in the development of proposed board policies.
  • Facilitate the PLC process.
  • Facilitate and supervise the Response to Intervention Program (RTI), AVID; MTSS, SEL, PBIS and other programs as assigned and/or developed at the building
  • Participate in interpreting and executing board-adopted policies and approved regulations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in staff supervision and evaluation (including the Principal and Teacher Evaluation Process (TPEP), staff development, and human relations
  • Responsible for the expenditure of student body funds and related revenue-providing activities.
  • Work cooperatively with other principals in coordinating the activities of the assigned school with that of other schools in the system.
  • Work with the Human Resources Department with regard to all personnel functions concerning building staff (i.e. personnel selections, transfers, resignations and retirements.)
  • Strive constantly to improve relationships between school and community through interpretation of school services to patrons.
As facilitator of the school/community interpersonal climate:
  • Be responsible for accurate and complete student school records and return on scheduled dates all statistical and other administrative reports requested or approved by the superintendent or designee.
  • Take every precaution for the safety and welfare of the pupils.
  • Assist in interpreting and carrying out the policies of the Board of Directors regarding transportation of pupils.
  • Responsible for all co-curricular activities that take place in the name or under the auspices of the school.
General:
  • Evaluate all personnel under his/her supervision at least annually and assist subordinate supervisory personnel with the development of their specific objectives.
  • Develop objectives annually in compliance with board policy and administrative procedures.
  • Perform such other related duties and assume such other related responsibilities as may be assigned by the assigned by the principal or designee.

  • Maintain open communications and promote positive relationships with staff, students, and parents, patrons and advisory committees of the school and district
