Compensation Range
The base pay scale for this position is $105,000.00 - $160,500.00. In addition, this position will be eligible for additional benefits consistent with the role. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be determined based on various factors, including but not limited to: scope of role, level of experience, education, accomplishments, internal equity, budget, and subject to Fair Market Value evaluation. The hiring range listed is a good faith determination of potential compensation at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.
What you will be doing
The Director, Operational Excellence, Capacity Planning serves an important leadership role within the Operational Excellence (OE) program at HSS focusing on integrated capacity planning, demand forecasting, and dynamic resource management across the patient journey. The Director will play a key role in driving organizational strategy and helping HSS establish and share best practices across existing and new sites. Developing and maintaining strong relationships with physicians, their offices and front-line leaders will be an essential part of the role. This role will also oversee governance structures related to OR block and outpatient session scheduling, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and operational needs. To this end, s/he possesses a unique blend of expertise in strategic planning, business acumen, and process improvement.
Director, Operational Excellence will own and drive projects to completion with specific tasks including but not limited to: development and presentation of leadership-ready materials, design of change management and communication plans, facilitation of discussions with multiple stakeholders, design and execution of analytics, and building complex models to inform decision-making and performance improvement. Additionally, the Director will play a critical role in developing capacity forecasting models and partnering with finance and operations to anticipate future resource needs. To this end, the Director will leverage analytical, project management, change management, and communication skills to ensure project success.
The Operational Excellence (OE) team is charged with eliminating waste and redesigning operations to enable continued success and optimize the patient experience. The OE team thinks beyond what's expected, from simplifying patient registration and decreasing operating room turnover time to streamlining the discharge process. The OE department is highly visible, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, and all members have the opportunity to work with multidisciplinary teams comprised of clinical and business leaders. As a part of this team, you'll be an essential resource, helping our hospital stay on top of our game, so we can ensure our patients do the same.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for capacity planning across the enterprise, ensuring alignment with institutional goals, patient demand, and resource availability
Lead initiatives to integrate capacity planning across inpatient, perioperative, outpatient, and ancillary settings to optimize patient flow and operational efficiency
Offer comprehensive executive support to senior & executive leadership by providing expertise and guidance on capacity-related topics, ensuring efficient decision-making and strategic planning at the highest level
Collaborate with Finance, Facilities and Service Line Team to forecast future OR and bed capacity needs and build solutions to alleviate any deficit or underutilization
Provide oversight and support for OR block management policies, outpatient session management policies, and bed capacity management strategies and support OR/OP scheduling optimization
Lead preparation for OR and outpatient governance committees, ensuring strategic alignment and data-driven decision-making and deliver subject matter expertise to the Committee
Provide oversight for OR block schedule and outpatient session schedule management/changes & optimizations, working with governance committees
Develop next generation models to enable data-driven and dynamic decision-making to maximize capacity utilization, revenue and minimize patient wait time and variable cost
Provide mentorship to junior team members, guiding and supporting them through complex tasks, thereby enhancing the quality of their deliverables and fostering professional growth
Education
Bachelors degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Engineering, Statistics or related field required
Masters degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering or Business Administration or a related field with a focus on Management Engineering, Healthcare Systems Engineering and/or Operations Research
Skills & Experience - Required:
5+ years of related experience in healthcare
Previous or current EPIC certification or experienced in one or more of the front-end modules
Experience working on multiple projects involving large data sets, data cleaning, data normalization, mapping, and validation
Exemplary proficiency in leveraging a diverse array of software and spreadsheet applications, notably MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Tableau, to excel in executing process mapping, process design, and work-flow management tasks with exceptional accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness
Experience in designing and implementing complex analyses, tailoring communication of findings to stakeholders
Demonstrating strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex issues, identify root causes, and develop innovative solutions that drive effective outcomes
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; effectively communicates with various departments to disseminate and receive information as requested
Experience leading and facilitating meetings with effective outcomes
Ability to critically think and synthesize information to see the big picture while effectively managing smaller details
Ability to manage multiple projects with tight deadlines in an environment of constant change with a continuous improvement mindset
High emotional intelligence and ability to collaborate with both clinical and administrative stakeholders
Ability to acquire skills and knowledge effectively and efficiently
Ability to influence people, build relationships and collaborate
Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality deliverables in a consistent manner
Skills & Experience - Preferred
Knowledge of process improvement methodologies
Experience in healthcare or hospital operations consulting
Strong knowledge of Tableau
Lean/Six Sigma Certification, or equivalent experience
