The Section of Newborn Critical Care, Department Pediatrics, invites applications for a full-time Neonatologist. The successful candidate will have 70% time for clinical activities and 30% allocated to administration, research and education. Interest in the areas of Nutrition/GI health, Chronic Lung Disease or with additional skills in POCUS would be beneficial.
Candidates must have completed residency training in Pediatrics and received certification in Pediatrics by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or equivalent and must also have completed Fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine accredited by the RCPSC or equivalent. In addition, the successful candidate must be eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
Neonatal Care is provided at 5 Hospitals within the Calgary Zone: Level III Neonatal Critical Care with surgical, neurocritical and cardiac care at a stand-alone NICU at Alberta Children's Hospital (ACH), Level III Perinatal Critical Care at the Foothills Medical Centre (FMC), and Level II Neonatal Critical Care at the Peter Lougheed Hospital, Rockyview General Hospital and South Health Campus. The Neonatal Program includes a nationally recognized Neonatal Follow-up Clinic (NFC) at the ACH and a RCPSC-accredited Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Residency Program, and AFC programs in NNCC and TNE. A busy transport service (Southern Alberta Neonatal Transport Service) and a Maternal Fetal Medicine Consultation service provide comprehensive care.
The Section of Neonatology provides neonatal care to Southern Alberta, which has an annual birth rate of approximately 24,000. There are a total of 126 Level II and III beds amongst five (5) Calgary Zone Acute Care Hospitals, admitting an average of 2800 neonates annually. Additionally, ACH provides patient care to Southern Alberta, SE British Columbia, and SW Saskatchewan, with a catchment area of approximately 2.8 million people.
The Department of Pediatrics has more than 300 clinical and academic faculty members who are part of the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. Many members are also part of the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute for Child and Maternal Health (ACHRI) or other Faculty research institutes. The successful candidate will be based at the PLC level 2 facility with clinical duties at both level 3 NICUs.
The PLC level 2 facility has 30 funded neonatal beds, and has the highest delivery rate in Calgary, ~5000/year. Capacity will be increasing to 36 beds on Oct 1 2025. Candidates with an interest and experience in families experiencing addiction and mental health issues, trauma informed care, family integrated, and family centered care are welcomed. Educational training opportunities include mentoring clinical assistants, NPM and pediatric residents, and clinical clerks, as well as simulation and training in neonatal resuscitation program (NRP) and code blue scenarios. The successful candidate will assist with further developing this level 2 facility, working alongside the interdisciplinary team as well as a strong obstetric, MFM, pediatric, family medicine and midwifery team. Initiatives include development of a level 2B unit, rooming-in and social supports for families experiencing addiction, augmenting the mother-baby dyad and skin-to-skin care, and quality improvement/assurance.
