INTRODUCTION

Under the supervision of the Medical Director, the Associate Medical Director is responsible for, but not limited to, coordination of daily activities related to the provision of care and the various medical disciplines of the Unity Health Care Health Center team, and serves as the liaison between Unity and the community. The Associate Medical Director is responsible for assisting the Medical Director in ensuring the delivery of quality, safe medical services of a clinical site, including supervision of all providers working at the designated site in collaboration with the Health Center leadership team.

MAJOR DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supports the health center and organization in contributing to the quadruple aim: improving health outcomes, improving patient experience, supporting care team well-being and the financial sustainability of the organization

Health outcomes
  • Performs and serves as a role model for patient care and medical provider duties
  • Assists with the supervision of the providers at site to ensure the safe provision of care and compliance with policies and procedures of Unity Health Care


  • Actively participates in quality improvement initiatives at the Center and engages team members
  • Collaborates on the review of health center data analysis to develop action plans to achieve the center's goals and shares relevant information with providers
  • Assists in sharing clinical best practices at the Center
  • Participates root causes analyses of incident reports to identify issues and potential systemic solutions
  • Assists in the managing the peer review process at their site in accordance with protocol. This includes reviewing provider charts at around 45 and 90 days. Specifically, re-evaluating those charts of providers not meeting the minimum standards and providing feedback.
  • Assists with identification of supply and equipment needs


Patient Experience
  • Reviews patient experience data with the leadership team and translates into action steps to ensure a welcoming, patient-centered environment for all patients
  • Assists in the investigation of patient complaints, particularly those with a quality of care concern or as it relates to providers and provides feedback, counseling or action when appropriate
  • Participates in the recruitment and onboarding of appropriately trained and competent (including culturally competent), mission driven providers
  • Collaborates with Site leaders to ensure workflows are optimized and efficient
  • Assists in the coordination of provider schedules and leave coverage
  • Collaborates with leadership team to identify and implement opportunities to improve patient flow including identifying providers who may have capacity to see patients needing care, raising concerns and problem solving in team huddles, and actively monitoring and managing the patient mix
  • Collaborates with the leadership team to improve non-medical systems procedures including registration, appointments, and patient flow


Care team well-being
  • Assists with the recruitment and onboarding of new providers into the Center and serves as a resource for all providers
  • Collaborates with site leadership to build teamwork among all team members, huddles and debriefs regularly with leadership team and has regular problem-solving sessions
  • Assists with planning and holding monthly site provider meetings


  • Assists with developing provider schedules and helps to determine and monitor provider template design in collaboration with providers and leadership team and in line with scheduling guidelines to ensure smooth operations of the clinic, productivity and to allow team members opportunity to refresh
  • Promotes and supports innovation and wellness culture
  • Ensure providers feel supported, advocated for and that they have agency to improve their practice
  • Meet regularly with staff to identify opportunities for support
  • Recognize providers and team members who are performing well
  • Teaching and coaching staff members to work at the top of their ability
  • Assists Medical Director with provider performance reviews by providing feedback and completing them as designated


Financial health
  • Assists with the monitoring of site productivity and identifies opportunities to optimize visit volume, provider capacity, no shows and scheduling templates for providers
  • Assists with the review and follow up on unlocked notes and incomplete task reports
  • Assists in monitoring walk-in volume and scheduling template utilization
  • Collaborates with site and organizational leadership in development and management of the site's budget


Other duties
  • In the absence of the Medical Director, responsible for supervision of providers at site and compliance with policies and procedures of Unity Health Care.
  • Collaborates with health center leadership team on a number of tasks involving overall clinic management, including participating in site leadership meetings and staff meetings which should be designed to promote quality of care, operational efficiency, problem-solving, and excellent patient experience
  • Communicates with providers and staff regularly about broader organizational initiatives, site initiatives and processes, procedures, and policies.
  • Participates in Medical Directors' meeting and the Unity wide QI meeting.
  • Serves on committee(s) as assigned by the CMO (e.g. P&T, Infection Prevention etc.).


  • Performs other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have a current DC License, CDS and DEA (registered in DC) registrations.
  • Board eligible or board certified in area of specialty.
  • 2-3 years of experience in an ambulatory care setting, with some contact with homeless patients preferred.
  • Managerial experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Must be willing to accept "on call" duties on a regular rotation.

The position requires contact with staff at all levels throughout the organization. There are also external organization relationships that may be a part of the work of this individual.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items such as books and paper is required.

RISKS

The position involves everyday risk and discomforts, which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meetings, training rooms, and other UHC health Care Sites. The work area is adequately lit, heated, and ventilated. The position requires contact with staff at all levels throughout the organization. There are also external organization relationships that may be a part of the work of this individual. All medical services shall be provided according to medically accepted community standards of care. The employee shall provide evidence of a recent (within the past twelve (12) months) health assessment that includes a PPD and/or chest x-ray results.
