Salary Range: SP3, Level 5, $92,320.00- $115,400.00 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

Specialist, Geographic Information Systems- Hybrid

The Opportunity

The Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist to create static maps, develop interactive GIS web maps and applications, and design GIS-based tools and widgets. This role will support the ongoing operations at the AGS and carry out routine tasks to assist with the development of ArcGIS Enterprise Portal products and the migration of products from ArcGIS Online to ArcGIS Enterprise Portal.

In addition, this role will support the Southern Alberta Groundwater Evaluation (SAGE) project supported by the Government of Alberta. The AGS SAGE project is a multi-year initiative designed to enhance the understanding of groundwater resources in Southern Alberta and assist the province in identifying potential aquifer systems. An inventory of groundwater availability and chemical quality will be completed for aquifers that have been previously unmapped. The GIS Specialist's role will focus on improving access to groundwater data by using GIS applications to release project results.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Create static maps, develop interactive GIS web maps and applications, and design GIS-based tools.
  • Assist with the migration of products from ArcGIS Online to ArcGIS Enterprise Portal.
  • Create efficient, readable, and maintainable GIS solutions to support project goals. Requires working knowledge of various programming languages and libraries used in GIS and web-based applications such as ArcGIS API for Python and Pandas.
  • Contribute to the AGS Publication Team by reviewing cartographically correct maps and web-based applications according to organizational and government standards and schema for presentation, scale, metadata, and projections. Review and edit metadata and topology for GIS data to ensure spatial information is captured, stored, and displayed correctly.
  • Create efficiencies in AGS processes by scripting and programming repetitive tasks and, where necessary, creating new and unique scripts to support the development of new functionalities.
  • Work with AGS staff to maintain accurate web-based applications and update associated base layers and geoscience data.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating the SAGE ArcGIS Hub page and Experience Builder applications to ensure optimal site performance.
  • Help create, maintain, and implement GIS systems, guidelines and processes for AGS and provide technical support for these systems and processes. May provide AGS staff mentorship and training in using GIS tools for enhanced geospatial processing.


What we're looking for in you:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, GIS, geography, engineering or related discipline.
  • 5+ years in industry, academia or government GIS work experience a combination of education and experience can be considered.
  • Highly proficient and working experience with ESRI products such as ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS HUB/Site, ArcGIS Enterprise Portal, ArcGIS Experience Builder, ModelBuilder, ArcGIS StoryMaps, and ArcGIS Pro.
  • Experience with spatial data analysis and statistical geoprocessing tools is required.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based storage solutions such as Microsoft Azure is required.
  • Familiarity with a variety of programming languages (e.g., Python (ArcPy), Java, JavaScript, or R).
  • GIS database design and Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) is considered an asset.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively with limited direction while demonstrating excellent verbal and written communication skills.
