Whenever a customer visits an Amazon site worldwide and types in a query or browses through product categories, our systems go to work. Our Search team designs, builds, and delivers high performance, fault-tolerant, scalable distributed search engine used by millions of Amazon customers every day. The Amazon Search Relevance org is responsible for product ranking in Search.

This role offers a compelling mix of technical innovation, leadership, and people management. You will lead a team of scientists and engineers to build Machine Learning solutions to address business critical needs. You will work closely with customers, product and program managers, other engineering managers, and tech leads and to understand what you need to build. You will develop the science and engineering roadmaps, communicate your vision and milestones to leadership and to your collaborators. You will deliver results that impact hundreds of millions of Amazon customers worldwide. A solid track record in defining and executing on a large-scale, distributed systems and a relentless desire to improve customer experience are requirements for success in this role. Your team's work is highly visible to senior leadership and directly impacts multiple organization goals and beyond.

Key job responsibilities

You will own a number of projects focusing on improving early phase ranking, ranging from personalization and spam detection to introducing reinforcement learning techniques for fast temporal adaptation.

A day in the life

As an Applied Science Manager at Amazon, you will spend equal amounts of time diving deep into your team's projects and crafting narratives that explain those projects to Amazon leadership.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- 3+ years of scientists or machine learning engineers management experience

- Knowledge of ML, NLP, Information Retrieval and Analytics

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business application

- Experience building complex software systems, especially involving deep learning, machine learning and computer vision, that have been successfully delivered to customers

- Knowledge of machine learning approaches and algorithms

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $165,500/year in our lowest geographic market up to $286,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
