The healthcare administrative fellowship is a collaborative and demanding one to two year leadership program designed to provide a unique development opportunity for recent graduates of MHA, MBA, MPH and other programs as they start their healthcare administration career. The fellow will work under the mentorship and leadership of the Chief Officer or Executive Leader to develop key skills that will prepare him/her for a career in healthcare. The fellow will work hand in hand with Keck Medicine of USC executives to support and eventually lead key operational, strategic, quality, patient experience and financial initiatives that will provide a broad exposure to key aspects of healthcare administration in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The fellowship will include rotations through key functions in the health system, involvement in key projects the Executive Leadership Team is implementing, and finally a 'deep dive' into an area of specific interest of the fellow. The fellow will participate in internal leadership development programs. The fellow will participate in key meetings with executives from all entities in the Health System. In Addition to project work, the fellow actively participates in high-level discussions and committees involving strategic and operational aspects of the system. This candidate will display recognized leadership and sound organizational and analytical skills and will actively assist the executive team in completing projects according to respective deadlines and expectations.

The Healthcare Administrative Fellowship is an immersive and collaborative two-year leadership initiative designed to offer a distinctive developmental platform for recent graduates of MHA, MBA, MPH, and related programs as they embark on their healthcare administration careers. Under the mentorship and leadership of the /Chief of Staff to the Health System and the Chief of Human Resources, the fellow will develop essential skills to pave the way for a successful career in healthcare. Working closely with executives at Keck Medicine of USC, the fellow will actively contribute to and eventually take the lead on significant operational, strategic, quality, patient experience, and financial initiatives, providing a comprehensive exposure to key aspects of healthcare administration in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The first year of the fellowship will involve rotations through key functions in the health system such as: strategy, human resources, finance, USC Care Medical Group & Ambulatory Operations, Keck Medical Center of USC Operations, and community hospital operations. The fellow will also demonstrate active involvement in projects led by the Executive Leadership Team. The second year of the fellowship will offer a focused exploration, or 'deep dive,' into areas of specific interest to the fellow. Participation in internal executive training initiatives, such as the "Keck Academy for Continuous Improvement" and the "KMUSC Leadership Development Program", will be integral to the fellowship experience. Additionally, the fellow will engage in key meetings with executives from all entities in the Health System. Beyond project responsibilities, the fellow will actively contribute to high-level discussions and committees addressing strategic and operational aspects of the system. The ideal candidate will demonstrate recognized leadership, solid organizational and analytical skills, actively supporting the executive team in the successful completion of projects within specified deadlines and expectations. Objectives: The overall goal of the fellowship is to prepare the fellows for a career in healthcare leadership through the following five key foundational elements throughout the course the fellowship: 1) Gain hands-on experience on the key functions of health provider system administration through rotations, where the fellows shadow executives, participate in key meetings, conduct 'gemba' visits to understand key processes, and understand key goals and performance indicators for the area. Through the rotations, fellows will receive direct guidance and mentorship from KMUSC executive and senior leaders. 2) Engage actively in priority organizational projects to hone program management and collaboration skills while supporting key initiatives. 3) Develop leadership skills by: o Participating in the KMUSC Leadership Development Program to support the fellows in their growth in oral and written communications, relationship-building, accountability, strategy development and planning o Developing project management and continuous improvement skills by participating in the KMUSC Academy for Continuous Improvement (KACI), successfully completing an A3 improvement project and interacting with operational leaders throughout the organization. 4) Learn directly from key executives by: o Participating in key leadership meetings including the Executive Operational Leadership Team, CEO Direct Reports, Finance & Strategy Work Group, Strategic Growth, System Services Leadership Team, among others. o Supporting the yearly Goals Deployment Process, working closely with the Executive Operations Leadership Team to identify and monitor goals, indicators, and initiatives. 5) Embark on their leadership journey by taking on a leadership assignment within particular area(s) of interest for the fellow which aligns with organizational priorities and current needs.

Essential Duties:
  • Partners with executives in the organization to create and develop project plans and budgets for assigned initiatives; drives results and revise plans as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements while maintaining linkage between projects, business needs and customer priorities.
  • Supports strategic decisions and provides direction within the organization to optimize management of scope, financials and schedule as it impacts project execution.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety standards, CDPH standards with Title 18 and Title 22 standards knowledge.
  • Collects statistical data for administrative purposes, prepares reports for presentation to hospital leadership and medical staff members.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
  • Participates in system initiatives using innovative and critical thinking. These initiatives might be of strategic, operational, financial or quality nature.
  • Participates in executive meetings with the Chief of Staff and CHRO of the system to deepen learning in hospital administration. Helps coordinate follow up and accountability on action items from such meetings.
  • Completes rotations in multiple departments and completes projects. These areas might include, but are not limited to: USC Care, Finance, IT, Human Resources, Quality, Operations, and Nursing Services.
  • Develop reports to support hospital and corporate initiatives, including financial evaluation of capital projects and strategic initiatives.
  • Leverage hospital data systems to review and analyze financial information for complex, difficult and varied management needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.


Required Qualifications:
  • Req Master's degree Master's Degree didactic portion completed or completion expected prior to start date (MHA, MBA, MPH).
  • Req Internships in Health System Administration.
  • Req Organization/time management skills.
  • Req Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Req Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheets, etc.

Required Licenses/Certifications:
  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)


The annual base salary range for this position is $68,640.00 - $112,370.00.
