Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Manager, Network Services, Campus Local Area Network (LAN) Technician is responsible for the installation and maintenance of the campus data network, development of work order, network monitoring, inventory of networking equipment, campus network documentation and project implementation.

The Campus LAN Technician investigates, analyses and evaluates network connectivity problem and develop resolution to the satisfaction of clients and in compliance to ITS Network Services' networking standards and best practices.

The Campus LAN Technician collaborates with other team members, clients, vendors and other parties in the development and completion of work orders, planning and implementation of projects.

The Campus LAN Technician leads the inventory of networking equipment and documentation of campus networking. They coordinate with other team members in the continuous development and maintenance of networking equipment inventory and campus network documentation.

The Campus LAN Technician uses network monitoring system and other related tools to assess network performance and capacity.

The Campus LAN Technician will have to work to inconvenient schedules in order to ensure that projects are completed on time, and will have to be available after regular business hours, on weekends, or on scheduled holidays in order to respond to a condition which may have caused a disruption to the normal operation of the enterprise campus network.

Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
Ability to analyze a problem, determine root cause and resolve it
Ability to work in a fast paced work team environment
Strong telephone, communication and customer orientation skills
Excellent understanding of network technologies; TCP/IP internetworking, routing (BGP, EIGRP), etc.
Excellent working knowledge of Internet services; HTTP, DNS, mail, FTP, etc.
Excellent understanding of network management platforms and tools; HP NNMi, Cisco Prime Infrastructure, Cable Management Systems, etc.
Working knowledge of technology pertaining to fibre optic and Ethernet cable specifications.
Working knowledge in many of the operating systems; UNIX, Windows, CISCO IOS, etc.
Must be willing to work weekends and be flexible for rotation assignments.

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
Three year college diploma in computer science, telecommunications, engineering, or related discipline
Five years of working experience in an Enterprise Network environment
