Description:
The Surgical Technologist works under the supervision of the surgeon and registered nurse.
They assist the surgical team during operative procedures by arranging and inventorying sterile set-up of instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical cases.
The technologist passes items to surgeons and nurses as needed.
They assist in preparing and moving patients and sterilizing and cleaning instruments, equipment, and rooms.
They use a physician preference card to identify supplies and equipment needed for scheduled surgical or emergency procedures and update the cards with any necessary changes.
The technologist sets up a sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions required for procedures.
They prepare solutions and medications used, labeling and reporting amounts for charting.
They prepare the back table and mayo stand, anticipating the needs of the surgeon.
They provide supplies or equipment upon request for the surgeon, nurses, and/or anesthesiologist.
The technologist assists with draping the sterile field, covering operating and instrument tables.
They perform appropriate counts with the circulator prior to the operation, before incision closure, and as needed.
They deliver surgical specimens and cultures from the operative field to the circulating nurse.
The technologist maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedures by checking package integrity, indicators, and opening procedures.
They prepare and sterilize supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures.
After a procedure, they review and replace supplies in the surgical case, discarding expired medications per protocol.
They assist with terminal cleaning of the operating room, putting equipment, supplies, and instruments away as required.
They help prep the room for the next patient.
The technologist holds retractors or instruments, sponges or suctions the operative site, applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, cuts suture material, connects drains to suction apparatus, and applies dressings to wounds.
They must provide on-call coverage outside of standard scheduled hours, if required.
The technologist effectively communicates with the surgical team and nursing staff.
They anticipate possible problems or complications that may arise during cases and adjust quickly, preparing for emergent situations.
They perform all duties in a conscientious, courteous, and caring manner to maintain positive customer relations.
The technologist maintains efficiency under stress and with irregular working hours.
They adhere to department procedures and acceptable protocols.
They apply knowledge of the dress code related to standard precautions and consistently wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
They report any life safety issues, environmental concerns, or process deviations to their immediate supervisor.
They participate in quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and research activities.
The technologist contributes to professional and program development by attending in-services and meetings, sharing expertise, and enhancing the quality of patient care and staff development.
They demonstrate effective time management and proactively prioritize workload and meet productivity requirements.
The technologist adapts to rapidly changing technologies, policies, regulations, census, and staffing through priority setting and flexibility.
