Naval Architect

Position Summary

Thales Canada is looking for a Naval Architect to support its Non-Combatant In-Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy.

The Thales Naval Architect will work with the Thales LCMM & Engineering Team to provide project management and technical support to various Royal Canadian Navy's Non-Combatant Platforms. This includes but not limited to planning, management and execution of various naval architecture tasks including stability analyses and displacement checks.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Plan, coordinate and execute ship stability and displacement verification activities, including lightship surveys, towing stability calculations, intact and damaged stability analyses, incline experiments, and prepare associated reports;
  • Identify, track and report on vessel weight margins as a result of configuration changes throughout the life of the vessel(s);
  • Manage the preparation and updating of marine system technical documentation including manufacturing drawings, design and materiel specifications, installation and maintenance instructions, and test and trials documentation;
  • Analyzing requirements associated with baseline changes to the ships configuration, equipment and software;
  • Prepare documented work scopes suitable for solicitation of quotations from external resources such as OEM's, manufacturers, suppliers, repair and testing facilities, or specialist service providers; Prepare technical proposals and cost estimates for Customer approval;
  • Development and review of Engineering plans, processes and procedures;
  • Assure compliance with applicable standards including SOLAS, Classification Society, and Naval Ship Code;
  • Support other naval architecture tasks, including:
    • Requirements analysis;
    • Design calculations;
    • Performance improvement investigations;
    • Weight & moment assessments; and
    • Support management of lifting appliance certification and testing.


Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum post high school education requirements:
    • Minimum 3-year Technical Diploma in Naval Architecture or other marine technical field offered by a recognized technical institute; or
    • Certified as one of the following trades of the Canadian Armed Forces:
      Marine Technician RQ-PO1 or RQ-PO2

      QL7 Marine Engineer;

      QL 6A or 6B Hull Technician;
  • Possess a minimum of 4 years of demonstrated technical professional work experience in the marine/offshore sector within the last 10 years;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Rhino3D, GHS, and AutoCAD;


Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiar with conducting weight and stability calculations and associated tools, and lightship surveys;
  • Strong working knowledge in the maintenance, operation, design, troubleshooting and/or repair of a wide range of hull and marine systems, including mooring and anchoring systems, outfittings, marine structure and coatings, propulsion systems, lifesaving equipment, and lifting appliances;
  • Previous experience with Royal Canadian Navy or Canadian Coast Guard;
  • Experience in delivering marine in-service support of operational assets; Experience with the planning and execution of ship dockings;
  • Familiar with certification requirements including but not limited to Classification Society, SOLAS/IMO, IEEE, CSA, Naval Ship Code, and DND regulations is an asset;


Physical Demands

  • Predominantly office work but will be required to work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships
  • Maybe required to undertake inspections in machinery spaces of Naval ships involving bending and twisting


Special Position Requirements

  • Schedule: 40 hours per week
  • Physical Environment: Hybrid position - a mix of working from home and onsite (in office or on board DND ships at waterfront)
  • Travel: Occasional domestic or international travel maybe required in support of the ships


Pay Transparency

The anticipated Total Target Compensation (TTC), inclusive of annual salary and bonus eligibility, for this role is 82,126.00 - 102,658.00 - 128,323.00 CAD Annual. The Company reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant's status protected by local, provincial, and federal laws.
