Unit Summary
The Medical Affairs department is responsible for overseeing administration for Professional Staff at Hamilton Health Sciences. Medical Affairs works closely with the Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Executive, the Senior Medical Officer, and Physician Chiefs. Medical Affairs supports medical workforce recruitment, credentialing, resource planning/allocation, education, and communication within the hospital. The department supports medical learners at McMaster University Faculty of Health Science (FHS), partnering closely with the leadership of FHS.
General Internal Medicine (GIM) at the Hamilton General Site is a Clinical Teaching Unit encompassing 8 West, 8 South, and 5 West. The GIM service consists of ward beds, step-down beds, express beds with telemetry, and ALC beds. The multidisciplinary team collaboratively to provide efficient high quality care for patients with acute medical diagnoses such as myocardial infarction, diabetic ketoacidosis, pneumonia, and endocarditis, in addition to patients with exacerbations of chronic medical diagnoses such as heart failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Position Summary
The Physician Assistant will work under the direct supervision of an immediately available Attending Internist within a multidisciplinary team in an academic in-patient setting. The Physician Assistant will play a major role in facilitating consistent application of clinical protocols and continuity of care, and will also identify patients with acute clinical issues common to medical patients and work within the multidisciplinary team to appropriately manage patient care. The Physician Assistant will provide a full range of physician assistant services in accordance with privileges granted, request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health care resources as indicated, order diagnostic tests as applicable, prescribe and dispense medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
Schedule Work Hours
Monday to Sunday, days, evenings, nights, weekends, on-call (as applicable)
This position is temporary until March 2026.
Qualifications
1. Graduate of Physician Assistant Program
2. Prior experience in an acute general internal medicine setting an asset
3. Demonstrated ability to make decisions in times of emergencie
4. Demonstrated ability to work alongside Intensivists, Nurses and other Health Care Professional
5. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills
6. Demonstrated ability to promote professional development
7. Demonstrated leadership and critical thinking skill
8. Demonstrated commitment to patient and family-centered care
9. Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem-solving, organization and prioritization
