General Manager - U.S. Operations (Food Machinery Manufacturer)

Location: Philadelphia, PA

An international manufacturer of food machinery and equipment is seeking an experienced General Manager to lead and oversee the operations of its U.S. business based in Philadelphia, PA.

This is a high-impact leadership role focused on strategic oversight, internal coordination, and team management, rather than aggressive sales development. The successful candidate will drive operational efficiency, ensure cross-functional collaboration with Japan headquarters, and guide the local team toward sustainable growth and profitability.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage all aspects of the U.S. operations, with a strong emphasis on sales performance, cost control, and profitability.
• Coordinate with Japan HQ and internal teams to handle customer inquiries, facilitate the machinery sales process, and support pre-/post-sales activities.
• Act as the bridge between U.S. operations and Japan HQ, participating in:
  • Regular web meetings (a few times per month)
  • Daily email communication with engineers, accounting, and management teams in Japan
• Develop and implement strategies to optimize costs and improve operational efficiency.
• Oversee and motivate a team of 7 U.S.-based employees, including:
  • 5 non-exempt production and technical staff
  • 2 administrative and support staff
• Make sound decisions regarding resource allocation, organizational structure, and business direction to support long-term growth.
• Cultivate a collaborative work environment that supports effective communication between U.S. and Japanese teams.

Requirements

• Proven leadership and management experience, preferably within the machinery or manufacturing industry.
• Familiarity with machinery products and related technical concepts (prior experience with a machinery manufacturer is highly preferred).
• Strong internal coordination and cross-functional communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and develop both production and office staff in a local U.S. setting.
• Bilingual proficiency in English and Japanese (business level required).
• Experience working in or with Japanese companies and cross-cultural environments is highly desirable.
• Flexibility to adjust working hours to accommodate communications with Japan HQ when necessary.
