About This Role:

The Senior Embedded Firmware Cybersecurity Engineer is responsible for developing and interpreting cybersecurity requirements to support firmware developers in implementing robust security features within embedded systems. This individual plays a critical role in guiding secure firmware design, conducting vulnerability assessments, and ensuring comprehensive protection of hardware devices throughout their lifecycle.

The engineer is expected to gain expertise in relevant cybersecurity compliance standards-such as ISO 21434, IEC 62443, and NIST frameworks-and use that knowledge to provide design guidelines and requirements to firmware teams. They will lead certification initiatives, working closely with regulatory agencies to achieve product compliance with applicable cybersecurity standards.

As a key member of Det-Tronics' Approvals Engineering Team, the Senior Engineer supports essential processes to maintain and uphold industry regulations. This includes conducting detailed product analyses, performing hands-on testing for compliance, and preparing documentation for regulatory certification. Additionally, the engineer acts as a cybersecurity compliance advisor-partnering with cross-functional teams on both sustaining efforts and new product development (NPD) and responding to internal and customer inquiries related to cybersecurity.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Interpret applicable Cybersecurity standards including ISO 21434 and IEC 62443 and work with development teams to derive cybersecurity requirements and technical requirements.
  • Conduct firmware vulnerability assessments, threat modeling, and penetration testing.
  • Understand product requirements and develop certification strategies to meet those requirements.
  • Collaborate with development team to develop, communicate, and implement a cybersecurity strategy and roadmap for products compliant with industry standards including ISO 21434 and IEC 62443.
  • Work with product and hardware teams to define security architecture and secure communication protocols.
  • Provide expert guidance to Det-Tronics business unit and development teams on cybersecurity concerns and recommended security controls.
  • Evaluate, develop and implement cybersecurity compliance plans for existing products and new developments.
  • Develop, refine, and review product cybersecurity requirements to be implementable and testable.
  • Utilize and maintain cybersecurity evaluation tools (e.g. SD Elements, Threatmodeler, etc) and processes required for ensuring product cybersecurity.


Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field such as; software/electrical engineering (highly preferred)
  • At least 5 years of industry experience.
  • At least 3+ years of hands-on firmware development experience.
  • Eager to develop a deep understanding of cybersecurity engineering by actively learning, gaining hands-on experience, and staying current with emerging threats, tools, and industry best practices.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience designing and implementing security and safety solutions for products.
  • Experience with sustaining and new product development projects, and strong working knowledge of product development processes particularly software.
  • Understand requirements in Cybersecurity standards and apply that knowledge in the evaluation of a product via technical analysis and/or testing.
  • Follow department operating procedures and have an open attitude for continuous improvement.
  • Solid excellent written and verbal communication skills to clearly present data and articulate test results to agencies and other internal working groups.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at once.
