We are currently seeking a Human Resources Director who will be responsible for providing bilingual (English/French) HR support across multiple plant locations (Terrebonne and Mississauga). This position requires fluency in both English and French, as daily business needs require effective communication with employees at all levels across the division. Language proficiency is based on the level of the role and the business needs of the position.
The Plant Human Resources Director is responsible for managing employee relations at the designated branches, as needed. Responsibilities include understanding and applying current HR legislation, regulations (such as PIPEDA, ESA, CNESST, WSIB), and other legal requirements to protect the company from litigation and to maintain a non-unionized status where applicable. The HR Director conducts investigations on employee morale, compensation/benefits, employment-related issues, and prepares reports and recommendations to management on these matters.
They will work closely with leadership to communicate, train, coach, and assist employees with the goal of effectively maintaining employee morale. The role may also assist with recruitment activities, including inclusive hiring, employee tracking, and interviews. They will advise and participate in meetings between employees and management regarding company policies, procedures, legal requirements, employee performance, discipline, benefits, restructuring, and more.
What You Will Do:
  • Participate in the selection process for employees and key leaders within the plants.
  • Lead a structured interview process at the plant level.
  • Identify hiring and workforce planning trends or concerns and take appropriate actions to address them.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of company policies, procedures, and legal standards in the hiring process.
  • Ensure that diversity and inclusion efforts are integrated into the plant-level recruitment process.
  • Partner with plant leadership to implement initiatives that enhance skills, capacity, and succession planning at Sonoco.
  • Onboard new managers and ensure a smooth transition into their new roles.
  • Ensure that effective compensation programs are designed for the local external environment, in collaboration with the Corporate Compensation team.
  • Effectively communicate pension and retirement programs.
  • Systematically implement any compensation changes using best practices (e.g., spot bonuses, job structures, base pay rates).
  • Ensure local HR training on compensation and benefits takes place; check in with coordinators to clarify any concerns or issues.
  • Ensure that general wage increases are appropriately communicated within the plant.
  • Maintain a general awareness of new laws and regulations and assist with their local implementation.
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of Sonoco's key talent management process concepts.
  • Identify performance issues effectively, when necessary.
  • Organize annual training on workplace harassment and violence.
  • Participate in SPS (Sonoco Performance System) activities locally and within the HR function.
  • Ensure comprehensive diversity, inclusion, and unconscious bias training is completed at the plant (when available).
  • Encourage the use of TOPPAN University for access to training and development resources.
  • Provide support and guidance to employees with concerns or issues-problem-solving, employee performance, last-chance agreements.
  • Apply Level A policy understanding to employee situations, such as attendance occurrences.
  • Offer opportunities for open discussions and meetings to resolve complaints and conflicts.
  • Build positive relationships with both salaried and hourly plant employees.
  • Develop relationships with the local union and plant union representation.
  • Ensure proper administration of the collective agreement.
  • Work on grievance processes with the assistance of the Labor Relations group.
  • Use relevant systems required for daily operational activities related to the role (e.g., UKG, SIMON, Workday).
  • Understand the key business processes enabled by systems (e.g., IT requests, payroll, benefits).
  • Understand how information flows through various systems and how it's used in the broader business context.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with internal business partners, earning their trust and respect.
  • Understand the importance of balancing employee and business interests.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
We'd Like to Hear from You if You Have:
  • A bachelor's degree (required)
  • 7+ years of direct HR experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills to interact daily with non-French-speaking clients and vendors
  • 10+ years of direct HR experience (preferred)
  • A master's degree (preferred)
  • HR certification (preferred, such as HRCI or SHRM)
