About McLean Hospital & the Programs

McLean Hospital, the top-ranked psychiatric hospital in the U.S., is seeking a full-time Staff Psychologist to support two specialized programs:
  • Trauma Continuum at Hill Center (Belmont Campus) - A Partial Hospital & Outpatient Program serving adults (18+) with trauma-related disorders, including PTSD and dissociative disorders such as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). The partial hospital service provides structured, group-based treatment, focusing on stabilization, grounding techniques, and trauma-informed interventions. The outpatient service includes individual and group psychotherapy, medication management, and consultation for PTSD and trauma-related dissociative disorders including DID.
  • The Gunderson Residence (Cambridge, MA) - A residential treatment program for adult women with personality disorders, offering long-term intensive treatment in a supportive, home-like environment. Utilizing evidence-based approaches, the program helps residents develop emotional regulation, interpersonal skills, and self-awareness, with an emphasis on psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and supportive therapies.

Position Overview

The Staff Psychologist will play a critical role in both programs, managing admissions, providing direct clinical care, and supervising trainees. The psychologist will oversee the inquiry and admissions process, conduct individual and group therapy, facilitate process and dyadic groups, and ensure patients remain on track with their therapeutic goals. Additionally, the psychologist will provide supervision to doctoral candidates and clinical staff, support administrative and program development efforts, and engage in outreach and professional networking to promote visibility for both programs. The role requires close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, social workers, and mental health professionals to ensure integrated, high-quality care.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Admissions & Inquiry Management - Oversee the intake process, assess patient suitability, and ensure efficient coordination of admissions.
  • Clinical Services - Conduct psychodiagnostic assessments, provide individual and group therapy, and facilitate family therapy sessions at Gunderson.
  • Supervision & Training - Provide guidance and oversight to doctoral students and clinical staff, ensuring high-quality training and support.
  • Program Development & Marketing - Engage in outreach and networking to strengthen program visibility and referral networks.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration - Work closely with psychiatrists, social workers, and treatment teams to coordinate patient care and treatment plans.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-accredited program.
  • Completion of an APA-accredited internship.
  • Licensed or license-eligible as a Psychologist in Massachusetts.
  • Experience with trauma-related disorders, personality disorders, and evidence-based treatments (e.g., DBT, CPT, PE, EMDR) is strongly preferred.
  • Strong skills in patient assessment, case conceptualization, and group therapy facilitation.

Additional Information:
  • Appointment as an Instructor at the Harvard Medical School is commensurate with experience, training, and achievements in addition to teaching activities.
  • Position is split between McLean's Belmont Campus & Cambridge site.
  • Requires occasional travel for outreach and professional engagement.
  • License-eligible staff are expected to obtain their license within one year of hire.

Why Join Us?
  • Work at a world-renowned psychiatric hospital with leading clinicians and researchers.
  • Gain experience in cutting-edge trauma and personality disorder treatments.
  • Engage in teaching, research, and hospital-wide initiatives.
