Primary function
The successful candidate will assist the Director General by supervising and coordinating criminal and family services in the Kenora and Rainy River Judicial Districts. Responsibilities include managing legal staff, developing new services, liaising with stakeholders, and ensuring effective, high-quality service delivery.
Home Location: Legal Aid Office - Kenora
Other Locations: Fort Frances, Dryden, Sioux Lookout
Reporting to: Director General, North District
Key accountabilities
Leadership role with respect to a variety of criminal, family and other specialized legal representation and advice services to clients, emphasizing client service, positive results, public legal education and case continuity.
Understanding of business processes and basic corporate finance, management and budgetary control with a goal of consistency, cost-effectiveness and efficiency
Identify and analyze complex issues and problems in management, finance and human resources, and to recommend and implement solutions
Contribute to the development of strategic and business plans as well as ensuring that appropriate and innovative service delivery mechanisms are in place
Manage and oversee the mentoring of a team of Staff Lawyers including Articling and Summer Law Student(s), and Legal Aid Workers in different locations ensuring effective staff development, hiring, and performance management
Responsible for stakeholder liaison and outreach
Support roster management processes along with the Director General and Manager of District Operations
Work with and support the Director General and Manager of District Operations and North District Management Team
It is expected the successful candidate will be scheduled as Duty Counsel in a court in the District approximately 2 days a week
Other duties as required which may include direct client service
Required skills & experience
Law degree and a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
Demonstrated experience in the area of family and criminal law
Strong leadership skills coupled with demonstrated commitment to client service
Proven experience as an effective people manager
Proven experience in managing financial and administrative functions and in directing and developing both professional and administrative staff
Strong consultation, facilitation, mediation, conflict resolution and negotiation skills
Experience in leading or managing change
Analytical and strategic thinking skills
Creative problem solving abilities
Knowledge of LASA 2020 and the Rules & Regulations thereunder and an appreciation and understanding of LAO's service model.
Experience managing in a unionized environment is an asset
Training or advocacy experience in relation to mental health issues.
Knowledge of the broad range of legal aid services, including those provided by Clinics, Student Legal Aid Services Societies, Pro Bono Students Canada and other social justice agencies.
Must have intermediate knowledge of the following Microsoft programs; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
French language skills or language skills in one of the indigenous languages common in northwestern Ontario are an asset.
Ability and willingness to travel between the noted home and other locations
