The Arlington County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to provide psychiatric care to incarcerated individuals in the Arlington County Detention Facility (ACDF). This position will offer mental health assessments, diagnoses, treatment, and medication management, along with crisis intervention and counseling. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will work closely with medical and mental health teams to ensure the delivery of high-quality care in compliance with relevant standards.
Responsibilities
Specific duties include:
The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, be able to work independently and as part of a team and be comfortable making clinical decisions while adhering to the standards and policies of the Sheriff's Office.
Qualifications
Minimum:
Substitution: A directly related higher level clinical degree (Doctorate) may substitute for the Master's Degree education requirement.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree and experience in one or more of the following:

Background Check: A pre-employment background investigation will be conducted (which includes a polygraph examination and drug screen). It will also include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. The background investigation is conducted by the Sheriff's Office.
Additional Information
Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional weekend or irregular hours may be required. On-call duties will be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

- Providing psychiatric care, including admission evaluations, follow-ups, and urgent and emergent consultations to individuals with mental health needs;
- Participating in the creation of individualized treatment plans, collaborating with the mental health care team, collecting and reviewing psychosocial data, medical history, and other relevant information;
- Evaluating patients for the need for higher levels of care, including hospitalization, and escalating care as necessary;
- Executing prescribing authority as part of the patient care team;
- Providing patient education on medication treatment adherence and aftercare services, documenting all activities in the electronic medical record;
- Integrating nursing and medical concepts in planning care for medically complicated psychiatric patients;
- Offering consultation to non-prescribing mental health and medical staff about diagnosis, treatment, and/or psychiatric medication;
- Counseling patients using advanced psychotherapeutic techniques, including group therapy when required;
- Providing clinical oversight for psychiatric registered nurse and/or practitioner trainees, including direct supervision and documentation of evaluations and feedback;
- Ensuring that appropriate laboratory studies are performed and reviewed, particularly regarding psychiatric and Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) care; and
- Ensuring proper documentation and compliance with criteria for the Buprenorphine dosing process, as applicable.

Minimum:
- Master's Degree in Psychiatric Nursing, which required a clinical mental health practicum prior to graduation involving diagnostic and treatment services; and
- Some experience as a certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree and experience in one or more of the following:
- Working with a diverse population, including individuals with severe mental health issues, addiction, and/or disabilities;
- Providing direct psychiatric treatment including prescribing psychiatric medication to individuals with serious mental illness in an inpatient or outpatient psychiatric treatment facility; and/or
- Working in a correctional medical setting.
Special Requirements
Licenses/Certifications:
- Must be certified or eligible for certification as an Advanced Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The Board of Nursing and the Board of Medicine may issue certification by endorsement to an applicant who has been certified as a Nurse Practitioner by another state, the District of Columbia, or a United States possession or territory; and
- Must have DEA prescriptive authority.
