Opportunity
Edmonton Global is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Manager, Clean Energy. The Senior Manager reporting to Edmonton Global's Senior Director, Business Development, supports efforts in attracting investment in clean energy, with a strong focus on the region's hydrogen economy. The Senior Manager also plays a critical role in supporting the development of the region's clean energy ecosystem and advocating locally and globally in partnership with the Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub. The Senior Manager works closely with other partner organizations and political partners to build from the region's solid foundation as a low-cost supplier of low carbon hydrogen to drive further investments from across the hydrogen value chain.

Responsibilities
The Senior Manager follows the strategic perspective and direction provided by the Senior Director to facilitate growth of the Clean Energy Economy in the region, with a focus on the activities of the Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub and other clean energy partners within the broader Alberta network and international investors and trading partners. Responsibilities include:
  • Identify and pursue industry investment attraction opportunities for the Edmonton region, building off the region's value proposition as a low-cost producer of low carbon hydrogen. The focus is on developing new clean energy markets such as mobility, heat and power, other industrial applications as well as the aviation sector (e.g. Sustainable Aviation Fuel).
  • Establish and maintain connections with the Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub to facilitate development, implementation, attraction, and retention of companies/industries and their contribution to the economy.
  • Develop a strong understanding of how the clean energy economy is relevant to all of the Edmonton region's municipalities as well as companies within the region that have the potential to become part of a strong clean energy cluster/supply chain.
  • Attract investment in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region priority sectors from industry and other public sources.
  • Identify risks related to growth and development of the sectors, then propose, develop, and implement solutions in consultation with the Senior Director and monitor the progress of solutions.
  • Identify technology applications and platforms that cross over sectors.
  • Collaborate with Alberta corporations on strategy implementation and forge strategic partnerships with domestic and international organizations (Institute to Institute, Business to research).
  • Support marketing initiatives and strategic partnerships developed to spotlight the Edmonton Region's clean energy ecosystem, including the annual Canadian Hydrogen Convention and Carbon Capture Canada.

The position will support the growth of clean energy industries that contribute to the Edmonton Metropolitan Region and Alberta's economy through the attraction, development and retention of partnerships, investment, and related supports.
  • Contribute to the development and lead the implementation of industry-focused strategic plans for Edmonton Metropolitan Region and Alberta in line with priorities and targets.
  • Support the identification and pursuit of strategic industry investments and partnerships with multinational enterprises.
  • Engage investors and capital through supporting directed campaign in partnership targeting key industry executives to encourage greater Edmonton Metropolitan Region, Alberta, and national research activity and investment.
  • Encourage technology leaders and skilled workers to relocate to the Edmonton Metropolitan Region and Alberta if needed.
  • Create customized solutions with senior executives of Alberta businesses to assist business growth.
  • Provide connections throughout the ecosystem to facilitate attraction, development and retention of compatible industries and their contribution to the economy.
  • Support the negotiation, development, and management of technology agreements with foreign partners to ensure the Edmonton Metropolitan Region and Alberta are connected to key knowledge and business networks worldwide.
    Industry needs for clean energy industries are advocated within the Ecosystem.
  • Develop and maintain executive level relationships with clean energy technology companies and key industry players to acquire industry knowledge and issues.
  • Work closely with key stakeholders to communicate market intelligence and needs of industry.
  • Engage and consult with industry to discuss and validate potential initiatives and supports targeted for industry.
  • Use global intelligence to build capacity in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region and Alberta by linking researchers and industry with global leaders.
  • Identify and execute new programs, services and policies needed to accelerate innovation and application in clean energy technology sectors and other strategic opportunity areas.


Qualifications
The successful candidate will be an adaptive and dynamic individual comfortable working in a fast-paced organization and will embody Edmonton Global's core values: integrity, collaborative, empowered, transformative, and invested.
  • Education and Experience
    Related university degree required, i.e. Business, Environmental Sciences, Political Science, Engineering, etc.
  • Master's degree in the above fields or a related field an asset.
  • Minimum of 7 years directly related experience in the energy sector, and an understanding of the political environment and how to operate within it.
  • 2 years of Management or supervisory experience preferred
  • Proven leadership, communications, negotiation, written and team building skills.
  • Expert knowledge of business financing, economic and industry development principles, practices, analysis, and strategies.
  • Ability to influence and impact decision making.
  • In-depth understanding of the Edmonton Metropolitan Region's & Alberta's energy and technology industries, research and technology and government processes and business requirements.
  • Knowledge of government and department policies, procedures, regulations, practices related to budget cycles, expenditure monitoring, strategic business/operational planning cycles, and policy review, development and implementation.
  • International business experience in developing partnerships and facilitating investment attraction.
  • Project management experience, particularly related to the development and implementation of government-funded initiatives.
  • Ability to build relationships with senior executives.
