Job Description
Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician
Profession: Tech
Specialty: Medical Lab
Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: Night
Hours per Shift: 8 hours
Experience: 1+ year in Acute Care
License: Associate Degree Required
Certifications: ASCP MLT certification or equivalent required within 6 months of hire
Must-Have:
- Associate Degree or completion of a military course leading to a Medical Laboratory Specialist specialty
- Relevant clinical experience
Description:
Responsible for performing all levels of general testing within the analytical laboratory.
Provides a high level of technical knowledge and applies that knowledge to department testing and clinical relevance.
Consistently functions in a self-directed manner and exhibits complex problem-solving skills.
Maintains a safe and clean working environment.
Follows laboratory and regulatory agency policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Performs cytogenetic testing with a high level of competency according to established protocols.
Generates and reports results that are used for making accurate diagnoses and prognoses, influencing patient care and management.
Performs job duties in an efficient and organized manner within the required timeframe.
Actively seeks to promote and help maintain a positive, team-oriented and service-conscious environment.
Demonstrates knowledge and competency of laboratory computer systems.
Responsible for accurate and timely result reporting, including communication and documentation of critical results.
Utilizes critical thinking skills and exercises independent judgment to correlate and interpret data.
Compiles and reviews reports to ensure all samples are collected, processed, and tested in an appropriate timeframe.
Assists with the resolution of unusual test orders by following up with caregivers and referring to lab leadership when appropriate.
Actively participates in training and orientation for new associates and students.
May be assigned lead responsibilities in various areas.
Participates in inspections as required.
May be required to participate in projects, teams, or committees.
Attends department and laboratory meetings.
Responsible for the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of instruments, along with appropriate documentation of activities.
Completes required quality control and maintenance, consistently recognizing variances and documenting appropriate corrective actions.
Participates in detecting and documenting occurrences that deviate from defined procedures.
Acknowledges receipt of specimens in the laboratory information system.
Receives specimens, assesses priority, ensures appropriate specimen identification, and specimen type.
Includes ordering and processing of registered and outreach patients.
Centrifuges, aliquots, and distributes samples to appropriate testing areas.
Prepares samples for off-site testing, including assessing appropriate sample type, container, and temperature.
Completes related paperwork and/or computer documentation.
