Position Rationale and Goal:

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Upper Elementary Teacher to join our dynamic Junior School team. In this role, the teacher will play a key part in creating a stimulating and inclusive learning environment where students develop critical thinking skills, intercultural understanding, and a lifelong love of learning. Their primary responsibility will be to effectively implement the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum, using innovative teaching strategies that inspire students to inquire, explore, and take ownership of their learning journey. The teacher will also collaborate with colleagues to design interdisciplinary units that foster inquiry-based learning, global awareness, and essential transdisciplinary skills.

Teachers are central to promoting the social, emotional, and academic well-being of students, and they play a vital role in cultivating a school culture that is warm, welcoming, and aligned with the values of the International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes. In alignment with the Ministry of Education and IB framework, the teacher will ensure that instructional programs are delivered in ways that maximize learning for all students.

Key Responsibilities

1. Teaching and Learning
  • Work in classrooms with whole group, small groups and individual students
  • Ensure students are actively engaged in their own learning
  • Empower students to feel responsible and take action
  • Support students in the pursuit of open-ended inquiry and real-life investigations
  • Teach lessons as directed by the classroom teacher or Principal
  • Contribute to the documentation of individual student learning progress
  • Advocate for the needs of individual learners and work collaboratively with the Learning Support Specialist to target areas for growth
  • Work collaboratively with various colleagues
  • Recognize a variety of levels of language competency and maintain awareness of the needs of emergent bilingual learners

2. Management
  • Assist in organizing events specific to the grade/class/subject area
  • Provide meaningful and timely communication to faculty, staff and management
  • Assist in monitoring student attendance, behaviour and progress
  • Inform the appropriate 'person of responsibility' when issues or concerns arise
  • Initiate and take responsibility for art displays
  • Assist in the budgeting, ordering, curation, and allocation of resources and equipment
  • Maintain resources and storage areas for the art room


3. Professional Appraisal and Development
  • Engage in professional development, as instructed
  • Actively participate in constructive professional growth and evaluation
  • Seek and act upon constructive feedback and advice


4. Involvement in the Wider School Community
  • Take an active role within the school community by making a conscious effort to interact with all staff and be aware of current school events and initiatives
  • Positively support school initiatives organized by staff, students or parents through active participation and promotion within classrooms
  • Promote school unity through taking an active role in diversity, equity, and inclusion education
  • Attend and contribute to assemblies, events and meetings, some of which may occur outside school hours, including welcome events, meet the teacher, student-led conferences, assessment day(s), as required
  • Lead or sponsor a club, council or co-curricular activity, or coach or sponsor a team athletics programme
  • Attend and actively participate in scheduled meetings
  • Maintain an active presence during scheduled supervision duties


At times teachers may be requested to take on additional duties as assigned by the Principal.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Education or related field
  • Strong organizational, communication, administrative and interpersonal skills, and
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Strong communication skills in English, both spoken and written
  • Eligibility for BC teacher certification prior to starting in role
  • A university degree with a teaching emphasis in a relevant field or completion of a teacher preparation program
  • Computer literate with experience in Google Workspace
  • All teachers will be trained in First Aid if they are not currently certified
