Job Responsibilities
Under general supervision, serve as Assistant Fire chief for the agency. Provide supervision, oversight, guidance, and leadership for air operations, prescribed fire, volunteer fire assistance, community preparedness, incident management team (IMT), and fire prevention programs. Provide fire weather intelligence, maintain fire weather stations, and develop process to ensure that field personnel are aware of upcoming fire weather. Provide tools and information to the field to ensure staffing levels and readiness plans are set at appropriate levels, based on current and expected fire weather.

  • Serve as Assistant Fire Chief. Represents the agency in meetings with cooperators and other agencies, and work with fire staff to develop consistency in fire operations across the agency. Lead agency efforts related to prescribed fire, including teaching CPFM, coordinating with land managers, and leading efforts to increase the capacity for prescribed burning in the state.
  • Oversee and provide supervision to Volunteer Fire Assistance, IMT, and Community Preparedness and Fire Prevention programs. Ensure that grant proposals are completed, funds are obligated, and that reporting is accomplished on time.
  • Serve as agency lead on fire weather, Air Operations, predictive services, and fire weather stations maintenance. Provide fire weather data, information on wildland fuel conditions, drought, and seasonal outlooks, assist with fire danger operating plan development and implementation, and provide information to agency leadership during periods of high fire activity.
  • Serve as Fire Duty Officer, assist with fire related training for agency personnel, assist with prescribed burning, mobilization of resources, and represent the agency at SCEMD during activations and exercises.
  • Participates in activities and/or projects in support of the agency's mission and performs other duties as required.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree and three (3) years of relevant program experience or equivalency as approved by Human Resources.
  • Must pass the initial physical fitness test of walking two (2) miles in 30 minutes carrying a 25 lb. pack or meet the agency's physical fitness program requirements.
  • Must obtain firefighter registration with the Office of State Fire Marshal.
  • Wildfire suppression and prescribed fire experience and criminal background check required.

Additional Comments

  • Must be a resident of South Carolina.
  • Must be able to lift, walk, squat, climb and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing environmental conditions. Position requires occasional work outside in cold or hot weather.
  • Works a Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m. schedule. Occasional overnight travel required. Duties require weekend and evening work providing support to fire fighting and field operations. Occasional out of town/out of state overnight travel required. Position requires availability on weekends and for prolonged periods during high wildfire activity,
  • Considerable knowledge of the agency's mission, programs, structure, policies and regulations, policies and procedures; in-depth knowledge of fire suppression procedures and tactics.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally. Ability to establish working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public. Ability to act effectively in emergency or stressful situations.
  • This position is designated as safety sensitive and essential. Position requires the employee to be subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace- CDL Drug and Alcohol Testing.
