Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, MLSS E&S, is seeking an experienced engineer in the areas of RF/Microwave and antenna design. The Staff RF Microwave Design Engineer role is focused on RF/Microwave Design and Analysis - Hardware Subsystem (Antenna) Tech Lead

Responsibilities may include development of antenna architectures, requirements generation/flow down; subsystem analysis including hardware from RF to digits, performance modeling, support for performance testing, requirements verification, and more. Work is performed without appreciable direction and exercising considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignments, including:
  • Interface between classified and unclassified teams to keep the development efforts aligned.
  • Lead the overall design and development effort.
  • Interface with the chief engineers on other programs to ensure that mutual benefit without duplication of effort.
  • Attend design reviews and weekly meetings, contributing experience and insight to ensure success on experiments.
  • Visit and coordinate with team members who work at other sites.
  • Deliver efficient and effective communication of design and architecture to hardware and software design engineers.
  • Mentor and engineers and other staff members.


Basic Qualification Staff RF Microwave Design Engineer:
  • Must hold an active Secret security clearance at a minimum.
  • Must have a Bachelors Degree in Engineering or related discipline with 12 years of experience in the areas described in the job description or Masters Degree with 10 years of experience or PhD with 8 years of experience. An additional 4 years of experience on lieu of degree.
  • Ability to design, model and/or calculate fundamental antenna characteristics
  • Effectively demonstrate understanding of fundamental RF principles, and Antenna/RF Performance Analysis.
  • Strong understanding of AESA / phased array, Radar, SIGINT, or SATCOM sensors.
  • Demonstrated communication and presentation skills in working with a variety of stakeholders including internal and external customers, program directors, and technical team members.
  • Ability to troubleshoot antenna hardware and test sets in conjunction with systems engineers and SME (Subject Matter Experts).
  • Demonstrating ability to make decisive call on program path forward and be able to present a solution path.
  • Team player who can lead and complete tasks as well as delegate and oversee the work of junior RF engineers as needed.
  • Ability to adapt process and test plans based on requirement updates and the review of measured data.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active TS/SCI security clearance.
  • Experience in electromagnetic theory, RF propagation, and advanced antenna principals.
  • Experience in EW concepts such as jamming, interference mitigation, and basic RCS.
  • Test experience in analyzing radiation patterns, VSWR, and impedance matching performance.
  • Experience with highly integrated subsystems including antenna hardware.
  • Subsystem requirements (hardware and software) derivation, flow-down, and configuration.
  • Expertise in Antenna Measurements and Data Reduction, including RF budget analysis and performance evaluation.
  • Strong MATLAB programming skills, with ability to develop scripts and functions with a focus on processing and analyzing large amounts of data.
  • Familiarity or ability to learn SAP System and Manufacturing process.
  • Experience with Atlassian Tool Suite, Git.
  • Hands on experience with RF Test equipment (e.g. Vector Network Analyzer/Spectrum Analyzer).


This role is contingent upon maintaining an Active Secret Clearance and obtaining SAP clearance.

Salary Range: $163,200.00 - $244,800.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
