Hawaii has a high prevalence of endocrine and metabolic disorders, necessitating excellent clinical care, research, educational programs, and clinical trials to effectively prevent mortality and morbidity associated with these conditions. Hawaii's unique multiethnic society provides opportunities to explore the genetic and environmental interactions fundamental to these diseases.

We are seeking a highly skilled, professional, transformative leader in clinical, research, and education operations who will nurture the growth of our department. This role fosters an inclusive culture of collaboration and cohesion among our exceptional faculty, empowering them to reach new heights of academic excellence. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality care for our patients and advancing the fields of endocrinology and metabolism through research and education. JABSOM faculty at UH primarily work in partnership with hospital systems. Additionally, JABSOM's research, education, and training support relies on the sponsorship of community-based clinical faculty. There are largely untapped clinical research opportunities within these healthcare systems for metabolic disorders, especially diabetes mellitus and obesity.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Instruction:
  • Educate residents, fellows, medical students, and other team care members in endocrinology through clinical teaching, precepting, lectures, workshops, or problem-based learning sessions.
  • Develop clinical services and a training program in Endocrinology and Metabolism to enhance the education of medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Serve as a resource lead for endocrinology in the medical student curriculum (both pre-clinical and clinical).
  • Contribute to the development of endocrinology rotations or research electives for learners.
  • Collaborate with departmental and school leadership to facilitate the achievement of JABSOM graduation objectives and ACGME competencies.

Research/Scholarship:
  • Conduct research in basic science, translational studies, clinical trials, and/or other clinical investigations related to metabolic syndrome, diabetes, or other chronic diseases influenced by neurohormonal factors.
  • Collaborate with the JABSOM Diabetes Research Center, the Cancer Center, and other research programs focused on cardiometabolic diseases and the mechanisms affecting subpopulations at higher risk for metabolic disorders.
  • Collaborate with JABSOM and its associated academic health systems to expand the clinical trial capacity for endocrine-related issues focused on prevention and intervention in significantly impacted populations.
  • Mentor clinicians in endocrinology-focused research.

Service:
  • Deliver clinical care that fosters and sustains a high-quality clinical learning and research environment.
  • May serve as the Division Chief for Endocrinology, which involves collaboration with JABSOM, the Department of Medicine, and other clinical departments, as well as JABSOM's affiliated academic faculty practices at Queen's, Hawaii Pacific Health, and University Health Partners of Hawaii. This role also requires working with affiliated entities across the state to coordinate education, research, and professional development activities focused on endocrine diseases.
  • Collaboratively develop and execute the Division's strategic plans and initiatives, which include improving interdisciplinary care delivery and care coordination, alongside leaders from other UH health professional schools such as nursing, social work, public health, pharmacy, and nutrition.
  • Promote and advance excellence in research, education, and clinical collaborations across the institution and community.
  • Enhance care and prevention systems for patients with endocrine and metabolic disorders by leading efforts to guide our healthcare systems in developing better-organized clinical care programs, incorporating insights from the robust Schools of Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work and Public Health, and the Department of Human Nutrition, Food, and Animal Sciences.
