General Description:
The Greater Chicago Food Depository is hiring a Data Engineer on the Research, Evaluation and Business Analytics team. The Data Engineer will be joining a team committed to informing strategic and transparent decision-making across the organization in service of our mission to end hunger. The Food Depository distributes food through our network of partner agencies and programs, including mobile distributions and responses for children, older adults and veterans.
The Data Engineer will have responsibility for architecting, building, and maintaining the Azure Data Warehouse to support the analytics capability at the Food Depository as well as serving as the engineer on cross-departmental projects. The role will work closely with internal staff from multiple departments to understand data needs and work with the REBA and IT teams as well as external service providers to build out solutions.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Architect: Design, build and launch efficient and reliable data pipelines (ETL) to move data across a number of platforms including third party analytics, frontend & backend systems.
- Project Manage: Manage cross-departmental projects including planning, communication, and execution of technical solutions to meet business needs
- Partnership: Partner with stakeholders to understand business requirements, work with cross-functional data and products teams and build efficient and scalable data solutions
- Educate teams: Use your data and analytics experience to see what's missing and identify and address gaps in their existing systems and processes.
- Design and build database architectures with massive and complex data, balancing ergonomic benefits with computational load and cost.
- Improve our Data Engineering stack through containerization, multi-source data modeling, and more.
- Monitor and maintain data pipelines and foundational datasets to support business users, analytics, modeling, experimentation, and product/business needs
- Contribute meaningful insights and feedback to our team processes.
- Develop audits for data quality at scale, implementing alerting and anomaly detection as necessary
- Partner with data scientists, analysts, and product teams to inform strategic decision making in service of our mission
Qualifications
Qualifications
- 5+ years of technology development experience including 3+ years of data engineering, reporting and analytics related experience.
- Strong systems understanding including SQL Server, API support/maintenance, Microsoft Reporting services/equivalent reporting & Data Warehouse tools, Windows, Azure, EDI, and web services.
- Enthusiasm for the mission of the Food Depository.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, comfortable working closely with end users, team members, functional owners, and leadership.
