Job Description:

This position is a full-time, onsite position located in Plover, WI.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Control Systems Engineer III (Senior Engineer) designs, develops, and oversees all aspects of electrical control systems, equipment, and machinery. This position is also responsible for the installation and technical support of PLC-based hardware and software.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs, plans, and schedules control systems development, including both hardware and software systems, for new/existing machines, options or configurations.
  • Performs all duties of an Engineer II in a professional and competent manner.
  • Develops machine functional specifications in conjunction with Product Management and Marketing.
  • Develops conceptual designs and recurring cost estimates.
  • Prepares machine development/project plan, work breakdown structure, and schedule/update. Communicates project status to supervisor/management.
  • Designs, performs and leads proof-of-technology tests; analyzes and correlates data; prepares reports and makes recommendations.
  • Leads and/or performs machine/process risk assessments.
  • Leads and performs Unified Modeling Language (UML) software design practices.
  • Leads detailed engineering tasks including circuit analysis, panel layout, schematic generation, BOM development, etc. Ensures that documentation is clear, complete, accurate and compliant with company standards.
  • Develops and tests PLC and HMI code, as described by UML guidelines.
  • Installs PLC and HMI code and tests machines at our production facility prior to shipment.
  • Develops written test plans to validate equipment design. Performs tests, analyzes results, prepares written test reports, and makes engineering recommendations, as appropriate.
  • Prepares and updates machine manuals, as required.
  • Performs machine quality inspections prior to machine shipments. Generates documentation to support quality compliance programs.
  • Trains other Control Engineers and Field Service Technicians in all aspects of the machine; transfers knowledge/release process to other members of the Engineering department.
  • Assists with machine installation, commissioning, field troubleshooting, and customer training, as required.
  • Becomes familiar with all safety and "best-practices" codes and guidelines (OSHA, CE, NFPA, etc.)
  • Becomes familiar with all company safety standards.
  • Performs all commitments/tasks in a timely and professional manner.
  • Performs other duties/responsibilities as required.


PURCHASING AUTHORITY LEVEL

Able to purchase project related items with the approval of the V.P. of Engineering or Engineering Supervisor.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Control Systems Engineer III (Senior Engineer) may be assisted by another Engineer, Engineering Aide or Technician. This position has no direct reports and is not directly responsible for managing others, but may be required to lead a complete project or the specific discipline designs of a project. The Control Systems Engineer III (Senior Engineer) is a leadership position that is expected to guide others by example.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

PE (Control Systems) preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
  • BSEE, BSCE, or BSME degree (or higher) and appropriate job-related continuing education.


Experience and Skills
  • Ten or more years of experience within an OEM manufacturing environment;
  • Experience with robot controllers is desired.
  • In-depth knowledge of controls engineering and a broad working knowledge of mechanical engineering.
  • Experience in the following software packages is required
  • PLC and HMI platforms (Allen Bradley, Siemens and Visual Basic)
  • Electrical schematic design software (ePLAN and PromisE)
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Advanced ServoMotion controls (Yaskawa, Siemens, Allen-Bradley, etc.)
  • Able to apply theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and current technology to create new software or to improve existing software.
  • Possesses a wide range of creativity and latitude in the application of standard and advanced engineering activities; exercises sound judgment in selecting and adapting engineering alternatives.
  • Possesses good communication skills, a positive "get-it-done" attitude, and the ability to work as part of a team in a demanding production environment.
