Why does the job exist?
This position will be responsible for assisting the Bureau Chief and Program Manager with performing Superfund oversight work, environmental site assessment, and the oversight of remedial actions at groundwater contamination sites.
How does it get done?
- Perform work in accordance with applicable New Mexico Water Quality Regulations or with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), commonly known as "Superfund," and the National Contingency Plan (NCP)
- Apply expertise in highly specialized technical fields of hydrology, geology, chemistry, and engineering for investigation groundwater contamination sites
- Implement cleanup of Superfund sites in compliance with appropriate state and federal regulations
- Complete special projects as needed
- Develop, conduct, and report on environmental investigations to evaluate risks to human health and the environment posed by contamination
- Review and comment on work plans and reports
- Participate in the remedial action selection process as well as public involvement events

- Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:
- Considerable technical expertise in environmental assessment and remediation of hazardous waste contamination
- Evaluating groundwater hydrology, with pertinent or similar regulatory
- Project management skills capable of leading site investigation and cleanup
- Excellent technical writing skills
- Field sampling
- Public outreach
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Agriculture Science, Hydrology, Geology, Environmental Science, Water Resources, Watershed Management, Physics, Natural Science, Physical Science, Life Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Forestry/Forest Science, Conservation Science, Wildlife Science, Emergency Management, or Engineering and two (2) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

If Minimum Qualification requires a specific number of "semester hours" in a field (e.g. 6 semester hours in Accounting), applicants MUST have those semester hours in order to meet the minimum qualifications. No substitutions apply for semester hours.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Occasional travel is required. Field work up to 30% of the time with exposure to seasonal weather conditions and potential exposure to hazardous and/or radioactive waste.
