Reporting to the Vice President of Facilities and Campus Planning, the Director of Security Services is responsible for the overall planning, supervision, and coordination of ArtCenter's non-sworn security services. This role leads with a strong focus on customer service, community engagement, and service delivery to ensure a safe, inclusive, and supportive campus environment.
The Director collaborates closely with students, faculty, staff, and visitors, fostering trust and transparency while addressing security needs with empathy and professionalism. This position oversees key administrative and service-oriented functions, including parking operations, access control systems, emergency preparedness, and incident response coordination. The ideal candidate will be a proactive leader who balances policy development and operational oversight with a commitment to serving and connecting with the campus community.
This is a full-time on-site position. Normal business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The position will require flexibility to work a staggered, remote or alternate schedule to meet the demands of the work, which could include weekends or evenings. Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office and campus setting; to stand or walk for prolonged periods of time; including, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, squatting, and twisting; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight (50 pounds); to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Effective verbal communication skills to present and respond to requests. Responsibilities may also include hazards such as contact with abusive or combative individuals, and first responder to emergency scenes. Regular and consistent attendance are required for most positions. Must be able to work long hours and weekends. Ability to travel around and between campuses and buildings.
Vision: Must be able to have the visual capacity to perform activities such as preparing and reading reports, looking at equipment, viewing a computer terminal and other normal work with or without correction.

Essential Functions
Security Operations - 945%
- Oversee and manage all security staff to include contract security company and ArtCenter's staff for the prevention of crime and the protection of life and property
- Develop, implement and/or update crime prevention strategies, policies, procedures and training objectives for the College; ensure all security staff are up-to-date on these practices
- Conduct, review and/or approve all written reports (security and incident reports), parking citations and warnings; conduct follow-up investigations
- Maintain and monitor department records, manifests and reports that pertain to security management as required by law
- Assign incidents for investigations and specialized tasks to staff. Delegate authority to staff commensurate with their responsibility
- Access and report potential liability risks and mitigate when possible
- Inform administration of incidents that may attract media attention
- Establish, maintain and nurture relationships with local law enforcement agencies and other first responders, including county, state, federal and emergency operations officials
- Serve as a member of the College Assessment, Response and Evaluation team
- Serve as a key member of the College's Emergency Response Team and Planning Committee.
- Active member of the CARE and BIT teams
Compliance and Programming - 30%
- Serve as the Campus Safety Survey Administrator for the Clery Act. Prepare the Annual Security Report for the campus on an annual basis.
- Ensure that the College meets all requirements under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (The Clery Act); accurately report all required data to the Department of Education regarding campus crime, while meeting required time frames; work in cooperation with other campus administrators with regard to Title IX compliance, investigations, documentation, etc.
- Conduct tests of emergency notification systems with all campus departments and local first responders
- Complete after-action assessments with security team to ensure best practices are upheld; revise where needed
- Participate fully in safety committee meetings
- Administer ongoing campus wide violent intruder workshops for students, faculty and staff
Department Operations - 20%
- Provide leadership and oversight of the day-to-day operations and ensure the department's work is aligned with, and in support of, the goals and objectives of ArtCenter's overall strategic plans
- Effectively manage department budgets and resources
- Oversee recruitment, hiring, onboarding, learning and professional development; oversee performance evaluation process, ensure consistent use of all applicable policies and procedures, including Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA); counsel, discipline and makes recommendations in terminations
- Enforce all College policies, including safety protocols
Non-Essential duties - 5%
- Serve on educational or college-wide committees, work groups, task forces and/or councils
- Attend conferences and seminars
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in criminology, criminal justice from an accredited college or university, or equivalent combination of training and experience in law enforcement or security/safety work
- 5-10 years of experience with security management, including budgeting, project management, performance management, effective delegation of duties, and supervisory responsibilities
- Experience with Emergency Management, Emergency Response, Crisis Response and Disaster Recovery in a high-density and high-populated environment.
- Must be a strategic thinker with the ability to exercise good judgment, collect and analyze data, establish facts, define problems, recommend solutions and lead critical analysis of existing processes
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including conflict resolution, problem-solving in order to communicate with the campus community, contractors and vendors
- Ability to establish short- and long-term goals that support the academic and operational environment of the College
- Ability to implement measures to prevent crime and improve safety on campus
- Knowledge of federal and state laws including California Penal, Vehicle and Health and Safety codes
- Appropriate training in National Incident Management System/Incident Command System (NIMS/ICS) procedures, including certification in ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 as well as Incident Action Plan development and Crisis Management. ICS 200, 300 & 400 preferred
- Current certification in Basic Life Support [Incident Command System (CPR) with automated external defibrillator (AED)] and Basic First Aid
- Trained in Incident Command System (ICS) response and leadership
- Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
- Able to use or learn appropriate security computer-based programs, such as MaxPro, and Prowatch Honeywell systems and Maxient reporting system or other related databases.
- Knowledge of security systems, including fire life safety, access control, alarms and Internet Protocol (IP) camera systems
- Ability to work weekends and evening hours, and to staff events
- Ability to enforce and implement policies and procedures
- Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check
- Must have a valid driver's license
- State of California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) certified security officer or able to obtain this certification within six months
- Demonstrated experience in cultivating an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming environment into workplace practices within ArtCenter's diverse communities
Preferred Qualification
- Experience in Higher Education
- Certified Protection Professional (CPP)
- Knowledge and understanding of Title IX response, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), Title II and other federal mandates for higher education
