The City of Everett is currently accepting applications for the appointive position of Engagement & Communications Specialist in the City's Transit Department (Everett Transit). This is a full-time position, working 40 hours per week.

Everett Transit operates local fixed-route and paratransit services within the City of Everett, and also owns and operates Everett Station. This position will be part of the Communications & Customer Service team and is responsible for creating and maintaining pathways that support and encourage deeper, more trusting relationships between Everett Transit and our customers, Everett businesses, regional partners, neighborhoods, and other community stakeholders through a combination of in-person outreach events and website and social media communications.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the Mayor or their designee, this position assists in the operation of Everett Transit's engagement and communications function with an emphasis on developing, establishing and maintaining social media and website strategies to meet organizational objectives. Assists in public relations and marketing to engagement and involvement among all city residents. An employee in this classification is responsible for writing, designing, and editing communication materials and social media content for Transit programs and social media platforms.

Employees in this classification assist in the coordination of communication to external audiences. This position is responsible for content creation and working with all city team members to ensure a robust social media presence. Employees in this classification are also responsible for creating and implementing a website improvement plan that will make online interactions easier and more accessible for people. This position will require attendance at some community events and assisting with some neighborhood meetings. Employees in this class may be required to direct the work of program staff, which includes professional and administrative employees on a project basis. Work is reviewed through observation and through evaluation of positive influence, analysis, results and effectiveness.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain Transit's online presence, including social media, intranet, and the city's websites.
  • Assist in providing engagement strategy, branding, and support for large-scale City projects and issues. This position will participate in the communication strategies for major topics, incidents, and emergencies.
  • Assist in the planning, development, and implementation of a comprehensive communication/public information programs for Transit's written, oral, and multi-media communications with the public, the news media, social media platforms, and City staff. Upholds and protects City brand standards.
  • Assist in identifying emerging public concerns or issues; implement responsive communications strategies, including online content, community meetings, and news releases.
  • Assist departments in developing strategic online engagement and media relations plans as needed.
  • Assist in the coordination and promotion of large-scale community meetings and forums.
  • Respond in a timely, helpful and effective manner to the activities, scheduling and communication needs of the City Council or individual members and to written and oral inquiries from the public.
  • Complete a number of original works, including internal and external communications, articles for a variety of publications, employee newsletters, speeches, or outlines for guest appearances at engagement opportunities.
  • Coordinate and implement communications strategies for the City's Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) program, serving as the primary liaison to large employers.
  • Develop and distribute quarterly newsletters, organize outreach events, and provide technical assistance to employers to support compliance with CTR requirements
  • Develop and deliver training sessions for Employee Transit Coordinators (ETCs) at participating worksites to ensure effective implementation of commute trip reduction strategies. Includes creation of training materials and providing ongoing support to ETCs to promote sustainable transportation options.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

A combination of education and related experience may substitute for education requirements.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations or a closely related field and
  • 4 years related experience in media relations, marketing or public relations.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Washington State Driver's License.

The City of Everett provides a consisting of the following:

  • Life Insurance for the employee in the amount of 2x the annual salary to $250,000 maximum
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment Policy
  • Long Term Disability Policy

Benefit eligibility for the employee and eligible dependents begins the first day of the month following the employee's hire date. Premiums for Delta Dental and HMA Vision are paid by the City on behalf of the employee and eligible dependents. Premiums for Life, LTD, Accidental Death & Dismemberment coverage on behalf of the employee are paid by the City. Premiums for HMA Medical and Kaiser Medical coverage are shared by the employee.

An additional benefit is available through a Voluntary Life Insurance program for the employee, spouse, and children. The employee pays the premiums for this benefit.

It is mandatory that both the City and the employee pay into the Department of Retirement Systems for Washington State.

Three voluntary Deferred Compensation programs are available for employee participation.

A Flexible Spending Plan is available that allows you to make pre-tax contributions for Health Care reimbursement and/or Dependent Care reimbursement for those expenses not covered by medical.

The Employee Assistance Program EAP is provided free of charge to employees and family members.

Generous vacation and sick leave benefits are provided to employees. Ten annual holidays and two floating holidays are paid.
