Description

Under general supervision of the Chief Dentist or Deputy Chief Dentist, serves as the first line treating dentist within the clinics and assists the Chief and Deputy Chief Dentist in the implementation and operation of the Dental Program. Performs a full range of professional dental duties in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental disease or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures. Uphold the principles of WIHCC's Vision, Mission, and Value Statements. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information at all times.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Encounters, diagnoses, and administers treatment for dental disease and dental health problems of greater than usual difficulty.
  • Handles dental health cases presenting with behavior and communication problems.
  • Provides clinical dental care including oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity, diagnoses pathological or irregular conditions, restorations of simple and compound cavities with standard and prescribed materials (cement, amalgam composites, etc.).
  • Administers local anesthetics; performs single and relatively uncomplicated multiple extractions of teeth; practices prosthetic dentistry by studying patient's mouth to determine type of restoration required.
  • Takes mouth impressions and bite registrations for crowns, dentures, bridges, trying temporary set ups, fitting and inserting finished appliances, uncomplicated root canal therapy, periodontal therapy including the removal of calculus and gingival curettage.
  • Treats mouth and gum infections and recognizes symptoms of an assortment of systemic diseases and refers for medical diagnosis.
  • Provides preventive, corrective, and oral health control services, to patients according to the WIHCC priority system.
  • Provides preventive services for children including Head Start, school sealant programs including fluoride varnishes.
  • Performs corrective services including pedodontia, exodontia and oral surgery, prosthodontia, and other services requiring complex knowledge and skill.
  • Identifies and diagnoses oral cancer and infectious diseases.
  • Conducts an integrated oral health program with other health services.
  • Acts as consultant and advisor to the medical officer relative to oral health matters.
  • Provides technical guidance and direction to Dental Assistants on a one to one basis, and provides feedback to Dental Assistant Supervisor.
  • Provides dental care on the Mobile Dental Clinic as directed.
  • Provides technical and clinical guidance, direction and supervision to Hygienist, Dental Students and Residents.
  • Accepts delegation from the Dental Chief and Deputy Chief to support the dental program.
  • Attends dental conferences and training on an as needed basis and provides input into the decision of materials and methods of providing dental care, in the selection of materials and methods used.
  • Participates and serves as an adjunct professor and instructor for the AEGD Program and student externship program.
  • Requires completion of tasks or duties assigned by a supervisor.
  • Upholds all principles of confidentiality and patient care to the fullest extent.
  • Adheres to all professional and ethical behavior standards of the healthcare industry.
  • Adheres to WIHCCs Personnel Policies and Procedures, departmental policies, rules, and regulations.

  • Maintains compliance with all Human Resources requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Degree in Dentistry (DDS or DMD); Licensed Dentist in the US. Post graduate experience is preferred, including a certificate from an accredited one-year residency program such as a GPR, AEGD or equivalent of clinical experience is preferred. Two year residency in AEGD and AGPR also accepted. Bilingual skills in English and Navajo language preferred. Must maintain a valid unrestricted and insurable driver's license. Must successfully pass a background investigation and maintain suitable requirements for a Child Care position. This position is considered as a Child Care position, which requires a satisfactory background check investigation and is subject to the requirements of the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, as amended (henceforth referred as the ICPFVP Act).

Knowledge, Skills, Ability:
  • Knowledge and experience in diagnosis and treatment of cases presenting with complex dental health problems, and/or handling of patients with behavioral problems.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to cultural and language differences.
  • Knowledge of strong work ethics in the workplace.
  • Knowledge of basic application of confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills, e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to consult with physicians when there is a medical problem involved in addition to the dental problem.
  • Ability to occasionally attend meetings in the evenings and on weekends.
  • Ability to independently perform professional dental work in many cases where the dental health problems are of greater-than-usual difficulty.
  • Ability to represent the dental Department on a number of committees, or meetings, as a representative of the Dental Director.
  • Ability to consult with and/or refers cases to dental specialists with extensive experience in specialized areas of dentistry.
  • Ability to identify and diagnose oral cancer and infectious diseases.
  • Ability to be dependable in attendance and job performance.
  • Ability to meet attendance, overtime (if necessary), and other reliability requirements of the job.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee frequently is required to taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in an office setting or outdoor work environment with a moderate noise level. Work environment may involve exposure to physical risks, such as blood borne pathogens and operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals. Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.

As required by P.L. 93-638, absolute preference will be given to qualified Navajo applicants. If there is no qualified Navajo applicant, preference will be given to qualified American Indian applicants.
