  • An Arts Manager assigns, reviews and evaluates the work of a staff engaged in the administration of diverse art activities and programs, such as community and public arts, architectural design and review, cultural grant programs, art collections management, historic preservation, development and fund raising, marketing, youth arts education programs, and cultural planning, or performs professional staff work in the above programs; develops budgets and expenditure plans; utilizes and maintains financial tracking and management systems; engages with the general public and elected officials as required; applies sound supervisory principles and techniques in building and maintaining an effective work force and fulfills equal employment opportunity responsibilities.

  • Two years of full-time paid experience as an Arts Associate with the City of Los Angeles; or
  • Three years of full-time paid experience as a program administrator or director of an organization responsible for supervising astaff and forcoordinating, developing, and implementing:
  • fine arts, digital media arts, visual arts, folk arts, performing arts, or cultural activities and programs; or
  • programs and activities involving public art and/or community arts; or
  • grant writing, fundraising, public relations, and/or marketing campaigns for arts, cultural, or educational institutions orprograms/activities; or

  • 3. A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Art History, Art Administration, Architecture, Business Administration,Cultural Studies, Historic Preservation, Marketing, Communications, English, Nonprofit Management, Public Art,or various artistic disciplines such as Music, Theater, Dance, Film, Design, Digital or New Media, Fine Arts, Literature, or Folk andTraditional Arts; and two years of full-time paid experience coordinating a program which involves the activities described in Requirement #2; or

    4. A master's Degree or Artist Diploma or Artist Certificate from an accredited conservatory, college or university in Art History, Arts Administration, Architecture, Business Administration, Cultural Studies, Historic Preservation, Marketing, Communications, English, Nonprofit Management, Public Art, or various artistic disciplines such as Music, Theater, Dance, Film, Design, Digital or New Media, Fine Arts, Literature, or Folk and Traditional Arts; and one year of full-time paid experience coordinating a program which involves the activities described in Requirement #2.
    PROCESS NOTES
  • Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience at the time of filing may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met.
  • The positions of Arts Manager in the Department of Cultural Affairs require a valid Class C driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) at the time of filing. Applicants will be disqualified and not be eligible for hire if their DMV record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of major moving violation such as DUI.

  • SELECTIVE CERTIFICATION
    In accordance with Charter Section 1010 (b) and Civil Service Rule 5.31, selective certification will be used for some positions that require special skills and/or training. Only persons possessing the following at the time of filing may be considered for appointment to fill such positions:
    Two years of full-time paid experience in the field of historic preservation including the application of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
    NOTE:
    Applicants who wish to be considered for selective certification as described above must respond to the selective certification question at the time of filing. The selective certification question is located within the Supplemental Questions section of the on-line application. Responses to the selective certification question will be submitted to an expert review panel for evaluation for those candidates who meet the minimum requirements and are invited to participate in the selection process.     The examination will consist entirely of an evaluation of professional and personal qualifications by interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Judgment and Decision Making; Supervision; Fiscal Management; Tact; Oral Communication; Written Communication; Project Management; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: various art disciplines;the design and layout of visual art exhibitions and installations; the cultural history and geography of the Los Angeles area, including artistically and historically significant sites, buildings, murals, and theaters; methods, techniques, and social media platforms used to administer, present, evaluate, advertise, and/or promote art and cultural related projects, programs, and events; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    Prior to the interview, candidates will be required to prepare some written material related to the duties and responsibilities of an Arts Manager. This essay material will not be separately scored, but will be presented to the interview board for review and consideration, which may include discussion, in the overall evaluation of the candidate. Those who do not complete the advisory essay will not be invited to the interview and will be considered to have failed the entire examination. To be considered complete, the advisory essay must include a substantive response for each question or problem included in the advisory essay for which a candidate is required to provide an answer. Please note that candidates must complete the advisory essay and meet the minimum qualifications as stated on this bulletin in order to be considered further in the examination process.
    The advisory essay will be administered on-line. Candidates invited to participate in the examination will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the specific steps needed to complete the on-line advisory essay. Candidates will be required to complete the on-line advisory essay between MONDAY, JUNE 16, 2025 and MONDAY, JUNE 23, 2025. Candidates who fail to complete the advisory essay as instructed may be disqualified.
