JobSummary:

The Registered Clinical Counsellor provides counselling and support toindividuals experiencing mental healthand substance use issues. This position facilitates the recovery and capacitybuilding of residents to maximize their social and economic, and other lifepotentials and support their goals for successful independent living in thecommunity.

This may include confidential individual or group counselling,tailored client care plans; and referrals for additional treatment. The positionwill also provide education to individuals and groups on mental health andaddiction related topics. The Clinical Counsellor is familiar with otherservices and resources in the community and works closely to provideinformation and support when required.

"This position is a temporary maternity leave coverage and will be eliminated upon the incumbent's return.

Responsibilities:

ProgramManagement:
  • Conduct integrated services assessment interviews, ensuringclients' privacy and the confidentiality of their personal information.
  • Assess clients' suitability for the program and makes referralsto other agencies when necessary.
  • Orient clients to the program by educating them on recoverymaintenance, relapse prevention, and personal and life management.
  • Maintain accurate client records (e.g., assessment data, clientcare plan, goal setting, case notes and discharge summaries, behaviourcontracts, incident reports, medication logs, etc.), reports, and statisticsrequired by management.
  • Ensure that all required documentation is complete and on time.
  • Work with the integrated addiction services team on clients'case planning and concerns. Ask for assistance from colleagues and/or managerswhen required. Communicate with clients' case managers, care teams, socialworkers, probation services, etc., as required.
  • Make arrangements for facilities and materials necessary forgroup sessions.
  • Assist with program evaluation and obtain client feedbackthrough questionnaires and surveys on services provided.

ClientServices:
  • Act as a positive role model, coach, advisor and leader forclients.
  • Teach clients effective social and interpersonal skills throughdaily groups and through the tasks of appropriate daily living and socialactivities.
  • Create and maintain a therapeutic environment followingtherapeutic community principles which encourage awareness of interdependenceof community members and the value of responsible concern for oneself andothers.
  • Work with clients and the integrated addiction services team todevelop client care plans (e.g., health, housing, education, employment, etc.),recovery maintenance plans and relapse prevention plans.
  • Assist clients with identifying high risk situations, relapseprevention planning and responding should a relapse occur (e.g., processing,safety planning, etc.).
  • Monitor clients' progress and modify client care plans asnecessary.
  • Orient client volunteers and provide coaching, guidance, andfeedback on assigned tasks.
  • Identify and act on changing dynamics of groups by assessingverbal and non-verbal responses and checking in regularly with participants.
  • Act on issues that affect the safety and stability of theresidential program environment.

Counselling:
  • Respond appropriately and effectively to clients who aretypically in various stages of recovery, have difficulty self-regulating andproblem solving, and who may have physical, mental, social, legal and financialchallenges.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of accepted counsellingapproaches, i.e., solution-focused therapy, addiction counselling, cognitivere-structuring, behaviour therapy, and client-centred therapy with the focus onbuilding the client's internal capacity and potential to change.
  • Act as an approachable, friendly, and ethical representative ofthe Society by building rapport with clients, enhancing clients' motivation forpositive change and encouraging clients to make healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Provide individual and group counselling to clients affected bysubstance use, mental health challenges, trauma, homelessness, criminal justiceinvolvement and other poverty related issues in a professional and ethicalmanner, reflecting evidence-based practices and clinical experience.
  • Explore the nature of clients' problems and their meaning forthe client and significant others.
  • Assist clients in problem solving and decision-making byfostering the client's ability to recognize problems and to determine paths of solutions.
  • Help the client mobilize resources to resolve their problemsand/or modify attitudes and values.
  • Facilitate learning of healthy choices, coping skills,relationships and boundaries; effective communication and conflict resolution;and positive parenting techniques
  • Respond to clients' requests and crises in a responsible, timelyand flexible manner.
  • Respond to the feelings, attitudes, values, and concerns ofclients with empathy and respect for their life journey.
  • Facilitate Relapse prevention and Transitional Housing Communitymeetings.


Qualifications:
  • A Masters Degree in counselling and registration with BCACC.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in community social services sectorand working with marginalized populations, substance use services, mentalhealth, corrections, etc., or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the population health framework,social determinants of health, the biopsychosocial model of addiction, andconcurrent disorders.
  • Satisfactory completion of a criminal records check withvulnerable sector screening is required.
  • Satisfactory completion of Tuberculosis Screening form isrequired.
  • Satisfactory completion of Employee Immunization Record form isrequired along with Covid19 immunization records.


Skills& Knowledge:
  • Excellent knowledge of the issues pertaining to recovery,substance use, concurrent disorders, homelessness, and addictions counselling.
  • Good knowledge of the BC Mental Health Act.
  • Good knowledge of facilitation, mediation, and conflictresolution techniques.
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense ofurgency and results-orientation.
  • Strong case management, teaching/training, clinical support andconsultation skills.
  • Strong therapeutic skills in the areas of individual and grouptherapy with adults with substance use and/or concurrent disorders.
  • Strong skills in Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, and databasemanagement systems.
  • Strong problem solving, analytical, and creative skills with theability to exercise sound judgement and make decisions based on accurate andtimely analyses.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicateeffectively in writing and verbally in English.
  • Ability to make effective referrals, reflecting in-depthknowledge of community resources and strong relationships with communitypartners.
  • Ability to lead and work in a trauma-informed practice.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the social sector with a passion forthe organization's mission is essential.

Salary for this role is between $42.27 - $52.81 per hour.
