All positions at the NM Public Education Department are based in Santa Fe, however some may operate through our Albuquerque office based on home address and space availability.

Why does the job exist?

The Web Solutions Developer is needed to ensure a robust and secure PED public website providing timely information and data to the public. The web solutions developer will maintain and
modernize the PED website quickly to deliver new information from various sources such as the NM Public Education Department program offices, executive management, and the Governor's office.
Topics of relevance to be published to schools, parents and students across the state include: student outcomes, licensure portal, graduation rates, professional learning opportunities, and press releases. The current website needs modifications to automatically publish data and information from multiple sources. This position will be responsible for managing, maintaining, administering and modifying the PED public website content management system to improve data publishing capabilities and enhance end user navigation and usability.

How does it get done?

60% - Development of new features and capabilities of the public website for a more effective end user experience including better navigation and searching.

20% Improve organization of bureau and program information to facilitate better end user navigation within the PED site. Incorporate more effective search strategies to assist the end user in finding relevant information. Research WordPress plugins to achieve desired functionality or custom develop plugins if necessary. Follow established IT Change Management process when deploying new features and capabilities. Verify changes comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Ensure website security best practices and data privacy practices are followed through periodic review by IT Security and Compliance staff. Identify and implement other integrations as needed. Follow established IT Change Management process when deploying new features and capabilities.

20% Include online forms to capture end user information where needed. Research WordPress plugins to achieve desired functionality or custom develop plugins if necessary. Follow established IT Change Management process when deploying new features and capabilities. Verify changes comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Ensure website security best practices and data privacy practices are followed through periodic review by IT Security and Compliance staff. Integrate the website with external resources such as: cloud-hosted data visualization tools for school and district financial data.

Who are the customers?

Public Education Department constituents include: parents, teachers, students, district and charter school administrators, PED Programs/Bureaus, and New Mexico legislators.

Ideal Candidate

A combination of 3 or more years of web development experience using PHP programming language & SharePoint Online, 3 or more years of WordPress content management system experience, 1 or more years experience with the Linux Operating system, 1 or more years of experience with relational database systems and 2 or more years of experience using and configuring Windows web servers.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology, Engineering, or similar technical degree and two (2) years of experience in software programming. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico's Driver's License.

Working Conditions

Office setting. Long periods of sitting and continuous use of monitor and keyboard. Stress due to deadlines and workload. Occasional overnight travel, work after hours, weekends and/or holidays may be required; Occasionally variable work schedule.
