Position: Title 1 Academic Specialist for K-5 ELA

Location: Academic Support Services

Reports To: Director of Early Intervention and Elementary Support

Salary Range: Administrative/Supervisory Schedule - Group H 69,531-114,457

Effective Reporting Date: July 1, 2025

Employment Period: 12 months

Position Overview: The Academic Specialist for K-5 ELA will provide leadership and support to ensure the successful implementation of standards-based instruction and to drive student achievement across elementary ELA rooted in the science of reading. This individual will work collaboratively with district and school staff to develop high-quality curriculum, instructional strategies, and professional development opportunities for improving the K-5 education program in Greenville County Schools

Major Responsibilities:

(1) Assist the Academic Support Services team in providing leadership for the continued analysis, development and monitoring of short- and long-range plans for improving the K-5 educational program in Greenville County School District.

(2) Ensure the implementation, promotion, and delivery of Greenville County School District's K-5 ELA curriculum as aligned to the South Carolina College- and Career-Readiness Standards and the Science of Reading.

(3) Assist in articulating the vertical and horizontal curriculum for the district in the area of English Language Arts.

(4) Assist in defining educational in-service activities and providing professional development for instructional personnel in support of the district's K-5 English Language Arts initiatives aligned to the Science of Reading.

(5) Monitor student achievement data to make recommendations and to direct or re-direct current instructional practices for continued improvement in student achievement.

(6) Provide leadership to ensure attainment of the educational goals of the district in support of the district's Science of Reading literacy initiative.

(7) Observe, support, and assist teachers directly in the classroom and through modeling and coaching effective K-5 English Language Arts content and instructional strategies.

(8) Engage teachers in collaborative planning, research and curriculum development using best practice in support of the district's K-5 English Language Arts program.

(9) Recommend the adoption of new instructional materials, methods and programs related to K-5 English Language Arts.

(10) Assist in the budget preparation for K-5 English Language Arts as needed.

(11) Maintain active participation with appropriate educational leaders in curriculum, instruction, and assessment at regional, state and national levels to ensure compliance with all regulations and mandates.

(12) Conduct regular professional development activities around the district based on district data.

(13) Support the implementation and integration of instructional technology, and

(14) Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Early Intervention and Elementary Support.

Qualifications: The person(s) in this position must meet the following minimum qualifications:
Master's degree;
At least three years of successful experience as a school administrator or instructional coach at the elementary level;
Minimum of five years of successful experience as an elementary teacher;
Experience with ELA curriculum development;
Ability to interpret data for program improvements;
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills;
Successful experience with evaluating program effectiveness;
Strong desire and experience working with teachers in the classroom for instructional improvement.
