Position Summary:
The Data Scientist within the Global Center of Excellence (CoE) will be responsible for developing and activating best data science practices across global enterprise operations and identification of supporting roles. This role ensures that data systems and processes are scalable and aligned with business objectives. This role is responsible for collaborating with cross-functional teams-inclusive of IT, data engineering, GBIT, and regional analytic hub leads to understand future state requirements and develop strategic roadmap. They are also responsible for providing perspective in global COE decisions regarding global vs regional use of data and how that data should be managed both technically and from a business perspective.The position should be performed from a Sylvamo facility (mill or office).

Key Responsibilities:
- Architecture & Design:
- Develop and maintain enterprise-wide data science strategies, standards, and best practices to support both current and future business needs.
- Design scalable, secure, and high-performance data models and solutions that align with the organization's strategic goals, ensuring integrity and compliance.
- Technology & Tools:
- Evaluate, recommend, and implement data technology platforms (cloud, on-premise, hybrid) and tools (ETL, data warehousing, data integration, analytics) that enhance operational efficiency and business insight.
- Lead proof-of-concepts and pilots of emerging data technologies to assess feasibility and impact on business processes.
- Governance & Standards:
- Collaborate with the Data Governance team and Architect to develop, optimize, and maintain data policies, standards, and procedures, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and internal quality standards.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams (e.g., data architects, business analysts, data engineers, product owners, solution architects) to translate business requirements into comprehensive data solutions.
- Provide thought leadership and mentor technical and non-technical stakeholders on data architecture principles, driving education and advocacy throughout the organization.
- Performance & Optimization:
- Monitor and optimize data solutions to ensure best practices in data collection, analysis, and efficiency of data processing systems.
- Proactively identify opportunities to reduce data redundancy, increase data accessibility, and improve solution performance through emerging best practices.
- Innovation & Continuous Improvement:
- Keep abreast of the latest developments in data science, analytics, AI/ML, and cloud solutions, recommending innovative methods to solve business challenges and elevate the company's data maturity.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives, designing measurable pilots and proof-of-value projects to validate advancements.
Required Skills and Knowledge:
- Advanced degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field; Master's or Doctorate degree preferred.
- Statistics - Good applied statistical skills, including knowledge of statistical tests, distributions, regression, maximum likelihood estimators, etc.
- Machine Learning - good knowledge of machine learning methods like k-Nearest Neighbors, Nave Bayes, SVM, Decision Forests.
- Strong Math Skills (Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra) - understanding the fundamentals of Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra is important as they form the basis of a lot of predictive performance or algorithm optimization techniques.
- Programming Skills - knowledge of statistical programming languages like R, Python, and database query languages like SQL is desirable.
- Familiarity with Scala, Java, or C++ is an added advantage.
- Data Wrangling - proficiency in handling imperfections in data is an important aspect of a data scientist job description.
- Experience with Data Visualization Tools like PowerBI, Tableau that help to visually encode data
- Strong interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills, enabling coordination across business and technical teams.
- Experience working within a global or international organization is a plus, demonstrating the ability to adapt to multi-cultural environments and diverse stakeholders.
