Job Description:

The Clinical Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care for patients with hematology and oncology conditions. The Clinical Nurse is responsible for the assessment, triage, treatment, and education of patients in accordance with Piedmont Cancer Institute (PCI) policies, standards of practice, and prescribed workflows. He or she works with additional clinical and support staff to ensure safe, effective, quality person-centered care.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
2. Active and unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Georgia
3. Basic Life Support certification
4. Completion of either the Oncology Nursing Society's "Fundamentals of Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Administration" course or the Oncology Nursing Society's "Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate" course
5. Oncology Nursing Society Provider Card

Summary of Duties:
1. Provides all care in accordance with state and federal law as well as PCI policies, standards of practice, and prescribed workflows.
2. Provides direct patient care in the Infusion Suite and Triage Department as assigned by Nurse Team Leaders and Clinical Managers.
3. Displays willingness and flexibility to travel to other areas and locations as needs require.
4. Conducts patient interviews and nursing assessments to develop, implement, and evaluate a nursing plan of care. Interviews and assessments may be in person or via telephone.
5. Demonstrates proficiency in venipuncture and management of vascular access devices.
6. Demonstrates knowledge of normal laboratory values and communicates appropriately with physicians or other healthcare providers when lab values are abnormal or concerning given an individual's clinical condition.
7. Performs therapeutic phlebotomy.
8. Demonstrates proficiency in independent order verification for chemotherapy and immunotherapy orders.
9. Administers chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and other medications (oral, intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous routes) in accordance with physician and advanced practitioner orders.
10. Utilizing available software, documents all patient interventions in real time. Interventions include but are not limited to: medication administration, procedures, virtual or face-to-face education or instruction, referrals to other specialties, organizations, and support services, and phone conversations with patients or other agents.
11. Follows protocols for the safe handling of biohazardous materials and hazardous drugs.
12. Assists physicians or advanced practitioners with patient exams or procedures.

13. Under the direct supervision of a physician, administers agents for conscious sedation and monitors sedated patients per PCI policy.
14. Responds to emergency situations in PCI offices as directed by PCI policies.
15. Responds to information requests from patients, care partners, and third-party agents and organizations.
16. Educates patients and care partners on plan of care. This care may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or other medications. It may also include procedures and referrals.
17. Monitor prescription requests and consults with physicians and advanced practitioners regarding approval or denial. Communicates approvals and denials with patients and pharmacies.
18. Provides psycho-social and emotional support to patients and care partners.
19. Recognizes the roles of the interdisciplinary team, patient and family care partners and utilizes them appropriately as resources in planning patient care.
20. Coordinates referrals to support services as applicable.
21. Provides clinical information to the Revenue Cycle Management Department as requested for the purposes of claims and authorizations.
22. Participates in prescribed research training exercises to develop a proficient understanding of clinical trials. Applies knowledge gained to execute tasks prescribed by the trial.
23. Serves as a liaison to third party outpatient service departments and organizations to coordinate procedures, medication delivery, and other specified care.
24. Communicates effectively with patients, care partners, members of the healthcare team, and third-party agents or organizations.
25. Serves as a resource to colleagues and as a preceptor to new employees as directed by nursing leadership.
26. Serves as a relief team leader as directed by nursing leadership.
27. Maintains a safe, clean work environment.
28. Manages time effectively and delegates responsibility as appropriate.
29. Utilizes resources in a responsible manner with a focus on cost containment.
30. Accepts personal responsibility for professional development and growth.
31. Respects and maintains confidential information. Demonstrates proficiency in HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) concepts.
32. Attends prescribed classes and trainings as required by the organization and the clinical department.
33. Performs related work as directed by the organization's management team.

Physical Requirements:
1. Lifting, carrying, or moving objects up to 50 pounds.
2. Frequent standing and walking.
3. Periods of prolonged sitting.
4. Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing) and fine motor skills (IV starts, venipuncture, injections).
5. Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

Typical Working Conditions:
1. Environmental exposures include but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure; Bio- hazardous waste, Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors; Communicable diseases; Electrical shock; Floor Surfaces; Hot/Cold Temperatures; Indoor/Outdoor conditions; Latex; Lighting; Patient care/handling injuries.
2. Travel may be required.
3. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators.
4. Environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

HIPAA Requirements: Clinical Nurse will have access to PHI and ePHI in the course of his/her duties. Applying the minimum necessary standard of HIPAA, this employee has access to the minimum amount of designated record sets required to perform his or her duties.
