Project-Based Position: This is a project-based position with an anticipated duration of 2+ years.

Location: Santa Fe, NM or New York Metro Area

Compensation: The salary range for this position is $103,130 to $154,180. Compensation is based on location and experience.

Job Summary:

The Sr. Production Designer is responsible for leading the oversight of the design and execution efforts of all exhibit related elements as a key member of Show Leadership, driving the various processes necessary while mentoring Staff and Associate level PDs in these processes. Innovative and creative, the Sr. Production Designer is an organized thinker who is able to ideate multiple technical and creative approaches and solutions to meet design criteria, such as, guest experience, capacity, spacing, etc., while understanding and adhering to the local building codes. Responding to the Creative Director and Creative Producer, the Sr. PD ensures that the project's creative vision and design is accurately integrated and documented in models, drawing packages, and executed through production. The Sr Production Designer demonstrates healthy and engaged collaboration as well as modeling communication strategies and workflows that support the project, and the various teams involved. Utilizes various drafting techniques and tools to review and navigate dimensional and scale drawings/models that detail construction methods and the integration of various exhibition elements with each other and the facility. The Sr. Production Designer is a leader on the Production Design team and a partner to creative disciplines, supporting Artists' intent and ensuring that the creative vision is upheld and executed.

This position coordinates with all project personnel, departments, and disciplines through the ideation, concept, fabrication, and installation phases. Responsible for designing construct-able projects to stay on track with creative intent, schedule, and stay within budget requirements.

The ideal candidate will enjoy working with a broad range of stakeholders and technologies. Critical to success will be the ability to build trust and relationships with technical and non-technical colleagues to understand their needs, and deliver relevant solutions leveraging a variety of user-research methodologies and design tools.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Drives and manages the development of the Show Design packages with internal and external resources to achieve these priorities:
    • Creative Vision
    • Physical/Functional Feasibility
    • Successful Integration with other trades
    • Guiding Budget & Schedule Feasibility - Managed by Show Producer and Project Management
  • Partner with collaborating departments to develop a deep understanding of workflows in the context of overall production.
  • Lead the coordination and management of all Show Elements in the Element drawing reviews, fabrication reviews and installation approvals.
  • Work closely with Show Management and Technical Direction to collect the information needed to create and help manage the Element list.
  • During early development, identify and develop code and safety requirements for Show Elements. This is accomplished with the assistance of other team and project partners in various fields of expertise and is done in conjunction with the Show Technical Director.
  • Inform and develop the RFP and work breakdown in conjunction with other Project Partners for Show Elements. Design and other members of the team contribute to its development, but Production Design will be responsible for delivering consolidated input to Show Management.
  • For Show Elements, the Sr. PD is responsible for developing, updating and executing fabrication and installation strategies that respect the facility constraints, construction order of operations, and critical path strategies as defined with Project Management, in support of the Creative Vision.
  • Coordinate with all Team disciplines and Partners to achieve the responsibilities listed above.
  • Lead the internal material compliance discussions and participate in the internal Engineering compliance discussions with the Technical Director.


Required Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 10 years in immersive art, theater, or themed entertainment production and installation.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture, Theater, Fine Arts or equivalent field experience.
  • 15+ years in immersive art, theater, or themed entertainment production and installation.
  • Strong technical ability in various design techniques/tools such as show set design and drafting, 3D modeling and architectural design.
  • Experience in all phases of a project, from Design, through Fabrication and on-site Installation.
  • Fabrication experience, or have experience reviewing and overseeing vendor fabrication efforts with a wide array of materials and processes.
  • Experience or familiarity with:
    • GSuite or Microsoft Office
    • SketchUp, Rhino, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, NavisWorks, Photoshop, InDesign or other similar programs
    • Bluebeam or Adobe Acrobat for PDF markups and redlines
    • AirTable or other database software
    • Planera or other scheduling software
  • Problem solve and ideate quickly with a host of project partners with varying levels of expertise.
  • Lead activities and development as they pertain to your Job Responsibilities as an experienced and seasoned professional.
  • Must be steadfast and strategic within Meow Wolf's highly ambitious, collaborative model.
  • Must be an effective listener and inquisitive: able to actively engage engineers and artists to understand their requirements and infer practical solutions that balance ease-of-use with implementation costs.
  • Must bring exemplary communication, team working and problem-solving skills, balancing the timeliness of solutions with the needs of the studio. You're also able to prioritize competing demands based on business value.
  • Sufficient technical ability to understand complex workflows, prototype design proposals and can effectively communicate complex technical ideas into easily understood and implementable solutions.
  • Must be versatile in the use of tools to prototype and visualize designs.

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and scanners. This position also works in an indoor setting with exposure to noisy environments, dim lighting, strong visual effects including strobing lights, special effects, fog machines and small and/ or enclosed spaces.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical ability to walk, stand, take stairs/slides/elevators, and navigate the elements during the day and night. Employee may be required to remain in a sitting or standing position for prolonged periods, and repeat motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time position that requires the ability to work a flexible schedule. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Supervisor Responsibilities:

This position does not require supervisory responsibility.

Travel

Travel is required for this position and varies by phase. This may include business trips and temporary assignments as necessary.

During the design phases, this position will require some business travel (10%-25%). During the production and installation phases, this position will require extensive travel (30%+). These percentages may change based on the candidate's location.
