Mission or Goal of Unit: To providesuperior, compassionate and innovative clinical care to our patients usingstate-of-the-art knowledge and resources and to conduct and disseminate clinical,research and scholarship within the subspecialty of Endocrinology, as well as to train future clinicians in the area of Endocrinology.

Chief Purpose of this position: TheVirginia Commonwealth (VCU) University School of Medicine invites applications for the position of Division Chair of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism within theDepartment of Internal Medicine. The school seeks a dynamic, strategic-mindedindividual with demonstrated leadership experience responsible for leading and growing the clinical, education, research andadvocacy missions surrounding the prevention and care of patients withendocrine disorders. TheDivision includes faculty with interests in all areas of clinical endocrinology;faculty members are located at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Centerand Central VA Medical Center.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching | Overseethe teaching responsibilities of the division as a whole including interactionswith medical students, residents, fellows, and other independent practitionersvia continuing education. The Chair is expected to contribute to the teachingof these learners based on their expertise. In addition, the Chair will beexpected to play a primary role in the mentoring of faculty and fellows inadvancing their academic careers and supporting the efforts of other faculty asmentors.

Research | In addition to their personal researchactivities, the Chair should develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhancethe research program of the Division of Endocrinology and the Department ofInternal Medicine. Specifically, the Chair should build relationships with theWright Center for Clinical and Translational Research, the Stravitz-SanyalInstitute for Liver Disease & Metabolic Health, and other academic units toexpand the academic impact of the Division. The Division Chair should developand support the research activity of other faculty, fellows and residents inthe area of endocrinology.

Service | The Chair will oversee alladministrative aspects of the division to ensure institutional goals are metfor academic and financial performance. This includes management of day-to-day division operations, staffing, budget, and division programs. The Chair will serve on departmental,College, and/or University and Hospital committees as defined consistent withtheir expertise and authority.

Clinical | The Chair willmanage, and expand as necessary, the Endocrine Division's multidisciplinary team which includesphysicians, advanced practice providers, diabetes educators, and pharmacists inthe clinical areas of:
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Metabolic Syndrome
  • Thyroid disorders including thyroid cancer
  • Pituitary disorders
  • Adrenal disorders
  • Metabolic bone disease and calcium disorders
  • Male and female hypogonadism
  • Hyperandrogenemia
  • Obesity
  • Gender-affirming care

Required Qualifications:
  • M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree
  • Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism
  • Distinguished record of scholarship manifested by a strong publication record; nationally recognized for achievement in clinical research
  • Administrative leadership experience in an academic medical center
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Clinical and research expertise in metabolism, insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • NIH Funded Investigator
  • Track record of effectively mentoring junior faculty
