Mission or Goal of Unit
Founded in 1970, the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health at VCUhas a long and proud history of training medical students and residentphysicians. Our department houses all of our family medicine medical studenteducation programs, including a highly rated clerkship and two longitudinal,four-year track programs. We have recently launched the VCU Health CommunityMemorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program with training primarilylocated in South Hill, VA:

The VCU Health CMHFamily Medicine Residency Program began in 2024 with a mission to producecommunity-centered family medicine physicians trained to meet the broad scopeof medical needs in rural and underserved communities of Virginia and beyondthrough real-world learning that promotes diversity, civic engagement,discovery, and innovation. The first year of training is centered in Richmond,Virginia and the second two years of training is based in South Hill, Virginiaat VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital. The residency curriculum responds tothe health challenges facing our nation, and creates leaders in healthcare thatwill transform systems to realize meaningful progress in health outcomes. Thefoundation of the residency program is the Family Medicine Residency Practicelocated a VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital Family Care Center.

The Inner City International Rural Program I2CRP is a 4-year longitudinalprogram for medical students who are invested in serving medically underservedpopulations. The mission of the program is to increase the number of studentswho choose career paths in primary care and who practice in underservedsettings. The program enrolls up to 24 students per cohort or approximately 96students during the M1 - M4 years. The preclinical curriculum includesdidactics, journal clubs, grand rounds presentations, and service roles inunderserved settings. The clinical curriculum includes second-yearpreceptorships in urban and rural underserved settings and clerkship rotationsin urban, rural, and international underserved settings in Family Medicine,general Pediatrics, Ambulatory Medicine, and general Surgery. Students alsocomplete a scholarly capstone project that is relevant to medically underservedcommunities.

The Family Medicine Scholars Training and Admission Track (fmSTAT) is a uniqueprogram designed to identify and select individuals who come to medicalschool intending to be family physicians. The four-year curricular trackprovides participants with tailored experiences that nurture, develop, andsupport this select group of medical students toward their family medicinecareer goal. It includes a community experience with planned and organicinteractions across academic years with like-minded and committed peers, 1:1family physician mentor throughout the four-year experience, Core familymedicine content through semi-annual retreat and seminar sessions, Optionalpaid summer research experience between first and second year, Professionaldevelopment (support to participate in state and national conferences, lettersof recommendation for opportunities of interest, networking with preceptors,researchers, alumni, and other professionals, etc.).

We also have four affiliated family medicine residency programs at variouslocations around the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Chief Purpose of this position
This position will work at the Community Memorial Health Family MedicineResidency Clinic and will support the Tanglewood and Clarksville clinics -South Hill, VA serving as a primary care physician and Regional MedicalDirector. The Regional Medical Director will be the lead physician responsiblefor collaborating with nursing and administrative leadership to promotequality, safe, efficient, effective, patient and provider centered servicesdelivered at these clinical locations.

Position Responsibilities:

Clinical (80%)
  • Responsible for maintaining a practice/panel at the Family Care Center Family Medicine Residency Clinic
  • Precepting Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students
  • Perform administrative duties as are appropriate and necessary to support operations of the VCU Health Systems including but not limited to completing patient medical records, student evaluations and other required documentation
  • Maintain clinical competency in Family Medicine and Newborn care
  • Serve on various medical staff committees
  • Participate in activities, which demonstrate professional commitment to position and to VCU Health Systems

Administrative (20%)

The Regional Medical Director will be the lead physician responsible forcollaborating with nursing and administrative leadership to promote quality,safe, efficient, effective, patient and provider centered services delivered atCommunity Memorial Health (CARES), Tanglewood, and Clarksville clinics.

Required Qualifications
  • Eligible to obtain license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Completion of an accredited residency program in Family Medicine
  • Board Certified and recertified if applicable by the American Board of Family Medicine
  • Experience in providing direct patient care to underserved populations across multiple settings
  • Willing and able to care for patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in providing direct patient care and/or residency training in rural settings
  • Direct experience in the medical education of learners such as residents, medical students, inter-professional learners
  • Confidence and willingness to be a faculty lead in one or more of the following:
    -Care of pregnant women including antenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum care
    -Care of adults in the inpatient setting
    -Care of children in the inpatient setting
    -Mental Health treatment in the primary care setting
    -Substance abuse treatment to include medically assisted therapy
  • Primary care Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and/or specialized procedural training in emergency, inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Recent scholarly activity such as peer reviewed funding, publication of original research or review articles in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in textbooks, publication or presentation of clinical series or case reports at scientific society meetings, or participation in national committees or educational organizations
